A buddy and I are planning to stay in Vermont starting next Monday and the intended targets are Sugarbush, MRG (depending on conditions), Stowe, and Smuggs. We've never been to any of them. We've been to Jay a number of times and will keep it in our back pocket in case things go poorly down south.

We haven't reserved any place to stay but, looking at a map, it looks like Waterbury/Colbyville is centrally located between these areas. Staying at one place would save us from moving multiple times. Any opinions about that area? What actual drive times are we talking about? Any recomendations for a trip like this would be appreciated.

Just skiied Smuggs on Sat (99% open) spent all day in the trees, still didnt hit em all, racked up close to 30K vertical, one of the best kept secrets out there, steeps, trees and $60 lift tix...we then drove to the Mad River Valley and stayed at the SlideBrook Inn, great bar, good food, clean rooms and for $60/night on a Sat night you cant beat it (shared Bathroom but it was well stocked and very clean--thanks Alex) the bar had a live band and the Jagermeister Girls for a bit...good times...if you are going durnng the week dont think you need to make any reservations....just show up

Where the hell is Colbyville???? I have never heard of it...and I am a Vermonter!

From Waterbury to SB is about 30 minutes...give or take. About the same for MRG and I would allow that much for Stowe...assuming you take the Moscow cutoff.

Smuggs, well, I'd say maybe 1:00-1:30 if you go 100 N to Mo'ville and then 15 W to Cambridge/Jeffersonville.

Colbyville is part of Waterbury...basically where the Thatcher Brook Inn is on Route 100. Blink, ya might miss it LOL.
Try the Best Western in Waterbury....good central location.
Keep in mind that Route 108 from Stowe to Smuggs is closed in the winter, so it's a lot longer drive around.

I'm pretty sure Colbyville is the area where Ben & Jerry's is at. There's only one sign mentioning it and its on an advance notice sign on the small green "village" signs -- "WATERBURY CENTER ... Colbyville X (miles)". I usually stay south of the BW/Shaws, as I don't head north too often, living right in the village as I do and traveling either northwest to B-town, southeast on 89, or south to the 'Bush. Though, Waterbury is quite the centralized location, a 10-15 minute drive to both the 'Bush/MRG and to Stowe, though Smuggs is more of a drive since the 'Notch Road is closed.

um, I think you mean 'mile' drive not minute. I lived in Stowe for a few years and getting to or from Waterbury in less than 15 minutes was pretty much a prayer outside of maybe 1AM due to traffic. That's to the Stowe center of town, nevermind the mountain itself. Sugarbush/MRG is an even further drive if I recall.

If you can make those mountains from Waterbury in 10-15 minutes, let me know when I can borrow your helicopter

So it's sounding like maybe it's best to stay IN the MRV for one set and IN Stowe for the other pair of mountains. Yes?

took us about 1:30-1:45 from smuggs to the SlideBrook inn at MRG, so yes, stay in MRV for SB and MRV and in/around stowe for stowe and smuggs...Stowe to Smuggs is about 35-40min

Okay, maybe I was off a little, but was trying to stress that Waterbury's a good location with easy access to multiple resorts....

I can make Mt Ellen from the village in about 20 minutes. That's 12 miles from 100S jct in Waterbury (err... Moretown) to the 17/100 jct in Waitsfield. From there its about 2-4 miles to the mountain.

To Stowe, yeah maybe its about 15 minutes to Stowe village, then another few minutes from there up the 'mountain road.

Not sure about any rates in the "resort towns", but I'm guessing you can get a descent deal in Waterbury.

And I don't think you'd want to borrow my "helicopter"... about 10 miles/gallon in town (seriously ... this is my only ride), a little better on the interstate. Perhaps an actual helicopter would get better gas mileage :-D
