Visa Black Card

Got a letter today saying I was pre-approved for a Visa Black card. Never heard of it. I'm reading the letter thinking it sounds kind of fancy and then I see the annual fee: $495!! Hey, I'll take two! My eyes nearly popped out of my head.

It goes on to say the card isn't made of plastic but carbon (oooooo..). Benefits include luxury gifts and 24 hr concierge service. It claims the card is only available to 1% of the U.S. population. I wonder if they've seen my small apartment and eight-year old Subaru.

My wife and I got the "invitation" to get the Black Card last spring (and laughed at the fee for it)

One of my friends from dental school actually has one of the Visa Blacks. He travels both domestically and internationally a solid 10 to 14 days a month to lecture to various groups, and swears by the concierge service that he gets from his Black Card. As he put it to myself and a few of our other dental school friends at a recent alumni event, he can pick up his phone, call the concierge number on the back and in less than 5 minutes have his plane tickets booked, his hotel, car, restaurant and any entertainment that he may want while on the trip to events and restaurants that are very tough to get acces too. He loves it and feels that what he gets interms of the services from the card is well worth the almost $500 a year. Then again, he is, and always has been a bit of a narciscist

looks like they are trying to take after the AMEX Black Card, which is in a whole 'nother league...

-You have to be a AMEX Platmn. card holder and demonstrate $250K/yr spending habit with balances paid in full at end of month
-$5000 to open account once you've been invited and accepted
-$2500 annual fee
