The wife and I are planning a 4 day trip to VT in mid-March. While we like Killington, the lack of a happening happy hour has us thinking about changing our destination.

Here's the deal, she's an intermediate skier at best. She's very happy and content to skid her way through the greens and blues. She doesn't inspire to become a better skier. To her, it's just fun. This trip is entirely for her to enjoy.

So I'm looking for suggestions for someplace where she'll have a blast on long groomers that has free wings at happy hour. Ok so I'm only semi-kidding on that last part, but having Blackbeary Wheat on tap is a bonus.

We're thinking, Stratton (got the free tickets), Okemo or Mt. Snow. Suggestions welcome? Oh yeah, cheap decent lodging with a pool and/or hot tub area also welcome.

Stowe....there are cheap lodging options to be had, under stated excellent intermediate terrain and the probability of better snow. You run more of a risk of having spring mashed potato snow in Southern VT come mid-march. That type of conditions can be tiresome / difficult for an intermediate skier.

K has one of the best happy hrs around...

We're thinking about hitting K again as we've been there and like it, but the lack of "free" wings at happy hour has us reconsidering. Plus, they wanted like $8 for wings that were given away for free last year

Pico is always a great choice. Plenty of terrain to satisfy all abilities and the Long Trail Inn is a great place to stop for some apres ski food and beverage!

Stay in waterbury at the BW..apres at the Alchemist or waterbury wings and ski MRG, Sugarbush and or Stowe. March is the best month here on average.

With good snow conditions I think beginner intermediates can have fun there. It's just fun to ski there and ride the single and whatnot.

Mount Snow is an intermediate cruising paradise (with some "good" stuff available too). Plus, Longtrail Blackbeary Wheat is on tap in the bar in the main base lodge  ;) And they've also got a bunch of nice smaller restaurants/inns in the Deerfield Valley that i'd bet that Mrs. Root would enjoy too :) Not that i'm Mount Snow biased or anything;)

Well, after looking at trail maps, she's leaning towards Stratton because of the "village". I didn't even mention to her that we won free tickets there already.

Okemo, Stratton, Mt Snow, and Bromley are perfect for intermediates. All should have great conditions in March. If there is a warm up, Okemo and Stratton will probably do the most at grooming the mounds away which will be preferred by most intermediates. Mt Snow is usually great through March. I've skied Bromley the last few seasons during first week of April -- they lose some trails since they are in the sun all day. March should be terrific there, lots of fun intermediate terrain and fewer crowds and they do a pretty decent job grooming.

+1

I'd also like to add:
They have a great deal on adult lessons at spruce. Package includes morning and afternoon lesson. You can put her in a lesson, ski the main mountain, meet her for lunch, ski the main mountain, then head down to the matterhorn for happy hour.

In addition, if she's looking to take a break from skiing she can go to the spa at Stoweflake or the two of you can nordic or snowshoe at Trapp family lodge.

I'm kinda pushing for Stowe...but I told her we'll discuss it more tomorrow ;)

Honestly...my wife loves Stowe. After the first trip up with her I now have no problem getting her to go up there. Town is great, plenty of cool stuff to do for an extended vacation.

Thanks, I'll pass that along as I know Stowe is also high on her list. It's really her vacation, and I'm just lucky that she chooses to go skiing on it ;)

Taking nothing away from the other areas of Vermont and I've lived all over the state, but there is no more beautiful mountain valley in Vermont than Stowe. Your wife will love it.

Stowe. Stowe. Stowe.

I got married there. My wife's choice, and she doesn't ski.
