Date(s) Skied: Friday Night 1/2/09
Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett, MA
Conditions: PP, Some junky areas but not bad for the crowds, low 20s
Trip Report:
Even after seeing the day session sell out and being well aware that it might be a night from hell, I headed to Wachusett and actually had a good night. There was a massive traffic jam from the people leaving the day session from the parking lot all the way down Mile Hill Road and even 140 looked slow. The night session had a very good crowd, but it appeared to be completely contained by the upper main lot.
10th: The very top was sheet ice on the short stretch under the lift and also appeared to have major base-depth issues. After that, it was pretty nice. The right side had perfect PP with a small topping of LSGR all night long. The bottom had a few slick spots.
Smith: Very top was similar to 10th... sheet ice with base depth problems. Hopefully they blow a little up there tonight. The section before the steep was all skied off, especially on the left side. The steep itself was surprisingly good, especially down the right. The rest of the trail to the bottom was excellent cruising PP. Polar was in what seemed to be absolute full speed (faster than I've ever seen it go) with lines exceeding 10 minutes most of the night until about 9:30. Didn't ski Conifer in an attempt to avoid spores as well as possible.
Hitchcock: Hit it early (4:30) before grooming and it was surprisingly good. Nice crusing the entire way.
Look Ma: A bit slick because of morons who like to jump the mounds and then hit the brakes right after, cleaning all the snow off the backsides of the mounds. I want to smack everyone that does that. There's no reason to land and immediately turn sideways; it won't kill ya to slowly slow down as you continue down the trail.
Ralph's: Took one run down it at 9:55 and even then it was littered with beginners. It was in decent shape, some good spots and some scratchy spots. Not bad considering the traffic. Minuteman was actually running like a real high speed quad tonight and also had lines in excess of 10 minutes.
A decent night considering the crowds and the conditions held up real well. I'm betting the 6" on Wednesday has a lot to do with that. They just need to fire up the guns at the top of 10th and Smith and then most of the mountain should be mint. All that's left to open is the Vickery Bowl, Balance Rock, and Ropers Road.
