Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain, MA

Conditions: Packed Powder, Artificial Powder, and... umm... cold.

Trip Report:

Well, my 12th ski day of 2006-2007 turned out to be my coldest day ever. The temp of -15 at the summit and -6 at the base around 9 PM blew away the -1 at the base and -10 at the summit I experienced in 2004. It actually wasn't too bad, except one particular run which I'll document later. First, the trail by trail.

Conifer/Balance Rock: Balance Rock was still icy at the turns, but the straight parts were nice. Conifer: Firm, very edgeable, and VERY fast. The patrollers were inside and the slopes were empty so it was OK to open it up and rip up some nice turns.

10th: Awesome. You couldn't do anything wrong on it. The snow was very firm, but again, insanely fast. It was like a racer's dream.

Smith: A little more scraped than the other 2 but not bad, especially skiers right. Lower was pretty nice with some mounds to get some air. Polar Express was in full speed and no line.

Hitchcock/Frannie's: The park at the top of Hitchcock was empty in terms of people so I hit the jumps a few times. Obviously small jumps, but they'll do as Look Mom building is in progress. Hitchcock's "steep" was kinda icy, but the half-open Frannies had no traffic all day and was virtually untouched and smkied like the summit trails. Lower Hitchcock was through the snow guns making the halfpipe, some of them blowing VERY wet.

Challenger: Pretty nice with the snow guns going, especially for the 2nd half. Only went down it once though so I didn't really get to see how it was later on.

Ralph's: Best run today. The 2nd half had amazingly fluffy manmade powder covering it and some mounds to blast through. Skied it many times.

That coldest run I was talking about was my last. I was covered in snow from the snowguns and went inside for a bathroomk break. Everything on me melted but didn't dry at all. Once back outside everything froze solid. To make things worse, the wind on that lift ride was probably the the strongest it had been that day (or at least it felt that way). I've never straightlined a run to the lodge so fast in my life.

Well, thats all for today. I'll be back Monday. Maybe we'll have a park and pipe by then.
