Date(s) Skied: Wednesday 2/9/2011
Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain
Conditions: Machine Groomed
Trip Report: Haven't seen a WaWa report lately....I was up there today for some midweek laps and it was a nice, uncrowded, sunny and cold day, ~20* and breezy. The skiing was decent, snow was hard groomed but consistent with no icy scratchiness. Got there at 9am and left at 2pm. Spent most of the day on 10th but here's my trail by trail...
Hitchcock: Groomed on the left but still has the bumps on skiers right for about 400'. These are small low angle bumps but they're closely spaced and have nice rhythm, just need to keep up speed since they flatten out at the end.
Terrain Park: They installed a goofy turnstile gate at the entrance that reads a magnetic card (if you had a park pass from earlier in the season you'll need to turn it in for a new one). The corral is narrow and a little awkward on the monoski. They built a new ramp jump on the middle hump that is a decent size, smaller than the two big jumps at the bottom. Not a big fan of the ramp jumps in general but I guess that's what the boarders want. I'd rather have a nice little kicker with a lip like the ones we used to build in the 80's and throw daffy's and backscratcher's off...Always nice turns to be had under the chair in the park.
Smith Walton: Groomed flat, skied fast. A few inches of loose soft snow on both sides but even the middle over the "headwall" had good edge hold where it sometimes gets sideslipped off.
10th Mountain: The seeded bumps are in on skiers left, about 25' by 200 yards. They're a little oblong and not as closely spaced as I like but they were surprisingly skiable with very little ice in the troughs. There's a big ice patch right at the top but there's just room to sneak by it on the left by the trees which is fine because that's where the best bumps and softest snow is - away from the groomed side where people hop in just to sideslip a few bumps and hop out.
Conifer & Challenger: Both higher traffic trails that had nice snow within 6' of the trees on either side.
Balance Rock: Best snow on the hill.
Trees: Took a couple runs through the woods and it was skiing very very nice. Soft churned up snow in the tracks, very little bobsled ice. Untracked was a crust nightmare but there were many lines to follow with nice turns and good pace, best skiing of the day, too bad it's not allowed.
