Trip Report:
Another great closing day event at Wachusett closes my 7th and final season there as a primary home mountain. Weather really played games with them, bring the trail selection down to Conifer, 10th, Challenger, and Ralphs. Lower Smith and Lower Salamander were skiable and poached by many.
Conifer: Very top was junk. At the sharp right, it got better with some small bumps forming. Steeps were very slushy with a lot of beginners up there due to Monadnock being closed. Lower had lots of slush, puddles, and other fun spring stuff.
10th: Bumpapalooza on the headwall. Multiple lines through the soft mogul field. Even dueled a few people today. Must've hit it 15+ times. I don't believe it, I had TWO good days in the Wachusett bumps this year. That's like 150% better than average. The rest of the trail included a crap spot right before the bumps, nice air over the second road, and a runout so slow you had to pole back to the lift.
Challenger: Took 1 run. Still had good cover with potatoes.
Ralphs: Decent. Also lots of potatoes.
Look Ma: Poached it at 4 PM. Hit some of the mounds and also had plenty of opportunities for grass and mud skiing. Some people even went down there, pulled the rails out of the woods, and put them back up.
Pond Skimming: My first time. Got a little psyched out so I didn't have enough speed and sunk about 3/4 of the way across. Now I know what to expect and can't wait till the next time I get to do it.
Well, another Wachusett season comes to an end. One of the longest in recent memory, going from 11/22 to 4/5 with the only major closures being the ice storm and the past week. It's sad thinking I'll never ski it this much again in my life. Yes, I'll be skiing way better places a lot more next year, but this is where I grew up and spent so much time for the past 7 years. I'll still be a passholder there next year so I'll be there a few times, but it's weird knowing I won't be there every Friday night and other assorted weeknights.
So, with the home mountain out of play, I'm down to a few days. Next one should be Mt. Snow next Friday (though the weather is looking like crap... story of my life... so we'll see). Hopefully that won't be all for Mt. Snow as I have a few passes to burn. My season will officially end at Killington on 5/2 (unless they don't make it that far).
