A bit late to write up MLK weekend skiing...
Sunday of the MLK weekend was forecast to be in the single digit in NH. It never even got there. It was -5 at noon and -4 at 2pm! So I went for some high energy x-c skiing instead.
Monday, I had a free ticket (thanks to "ski in cheap" thread) for Waterville Valley. And it was also a cold day so I again had a late start (11am).
On the chair ride up, I could see the ice hung on tree branches. So they got some ice earlier in the week. But the slope were in better condition than what I feared. While alternating from slick to chunk of ice, it was edge-able.
Some time in the afternoon, I saw some people popping out behind the trees from the right side of the summit lift. I then realized there was a trail I didn't notice. It turned out to have the best snow of the day! (probably because few people skied it). It ended too soon though, back into the main trail under the lift. Still, I lapped it a few times before moving on to other trails. Some were good and some not so.
I'd had to say for this particular weekend, Waterville did a better job of presenting a good snow surface than Bretton Woods, despite receiving worse mixed precip than the mostly snowy ones further north at Bretton Woods.
