On the other hand, I put all my wool socks in the dryer--hiking, thin Smartwool skiing, and padded Smartwool skiing--and I've had the same pairs for a few years now. My ski socks have seen a lot of use with having to wear an ankle-foot orthosis for the last 6 months and they're holding up well.

The only Smartwool item I ever had was a wool neck gaiter, which I liked because it was thinner than Polartec so I could zip up my jacket over it. It wasn't as warm and was a little scratchy but it worked for most ski days. Then one day it disappeared. A friend has a Smartwool pullover top that he wears for skiing- he raves about it. He wore it every day on a long ski trip in Europe without washing it but it never got smelly. He knew this because he would ask local ladies to smell the armpits- it never failed!
My everyday socks are Gold Toe- in cold weather I use the synthetic blend, and cotton in hot weather. There's an outlet store I stop by on the way to my daughter's school.
The Costco Merino wool socks are terrific for the price, but they're a little too thick to wear with anything but roomy hiking/work boots.
My ski socks are "Ski Wool Supreme," if I remember correctly. A blend of Merino wool and synthetic, very warm and comfy. Got 'em on sale somewhere. Highly recommend them.

Maybe I'll get some Smartwools for my wife for Valentine's Day. She loves nice socks. I think Campmor carries them. That'll score some points too.
