Sucks... Mom and Pops in the same sentence as Taco Bell...
It's not easy.... This in between time of year especially...

i can assure you the private ski areas of the Catskills had nothing to do with this... :)

It very sad to see business close and jobs lost, painful to see.

For many chains though, there is a reason that their stores tank. For one thing, how aggressive they undercut mom and pops on price, puts them at severe risk. Even though their buying power is huge and they get incredible deals on product, they still sell it at a very low margin (5%) in hopes of making money on volume. This is a major risk when we get a year like that were costs rose 15-20%. They can't react like a mom and pop and raise their prices in hopes of maintaining the same volume.

More than just the business models, chains get complacent and boring. Actually most restaurants do. I really only think 2% of restaurants have either historic value or the evolving capability to keep doing the same thing beyond ten-fifteen years of operation. Most should shut down, re-tool and start over at that time. Fairly simple to re-concept a stand alone; not so with a chain.

I also thought it was lame that they cited the restaurants that closed (Mom and Pops mainly) and then touted that a Taco Bell had opened

I'm guilty of stopping there... I either eat on the access road or hit fast food on the way out of town..

Pretty funny to see Taco Bell referred to as a "restaurant"....I thought Rutland was a little more sophisticated than that....
