January - Skiers prefer pools to slopes

Around Slovakia - Liptovský Mikuláš 17 Dec 2007 Jana Liptáková Regional News SOME 3,000 people a day visited the thermal pools at the Tatralandia waterpark in Liptovský Mikuláš at the beginning of January – most of them disgruntled skiers, the facility’s marketing director, Katarína Sarafínová told the media.
Skiers were not pleased with the snow conditions at the local ski resorts, Sarafínová said.
“In past winters, visitors would come to the waterpark late in the afternoon to relax after a full day’s skiing,” she said. “These days they’re here from the morning.”
On January 2, skiers at the Jasna ski resort were only able to use two slopes. The snow shortage led to a relatively low number of visitors over the Christmas holidays, Richard Ortutay, marketing director of Jasná Nízke Tatry (Low Tatras), he said.
Some tourists cancelled their stays, while others came one day later than planned, he said.
