New to this but thought this might be the place to go to get the real skinny on ski conditions in the northeast this time of year. My fiance just moved out from UT to NY this year and is staring down at this first winter without 90+ days of skiing ahead of him. I wanted to take him to the best snow that can be had in January in the Northeast but not sure where that is -- skied Mt. Snow all the time growing up and a bit at Stowe, but not too familiar with the others. Thanks for passing on any first hand knowledge...

Unfortunately he picked the wrong time to move...with this dreadful weather we've been having there really isnt anywhere right now...not that he'll do anything but complain about anyway....i hope he brought back some of that weather with him...we sure need it....

Hope for a few dumps...and we might save this season yet..

Good luck with the wedding and whatnot...and welcome to the board...

Thanks - it's really dreadful isn't it? But if you had to pick one place in the Northeast, where would it be? thanks!

We'll be in Utah part of the winter but he's already feeling antsy about not having gotten out there. Excuse my ignorance, but what's MRG?

stowe, jay peak, smugglers notch, sugarbush, mad river glen, and whiteface are your best bets for the best of new england. jay peak gets the most powder and has the best trees whereas stowe is just barely behind jay peak in powder and has the best lift serviced backcountry around. whiteface has the slides which is essentially lift serviced backcountry on the map and to the best of my knowledge, the only ski area that opens terrain and requires avi gear to access that terrain during high avi conditions. mad river glen is a must due to its unique aspects. great trees and the most challenging on the map terrain in new england. don't forget tuckerman ravine for late season turn earning, it is a must do for all skiers.

as for january? good luck. your hubby to be better get used to faux sneuax really quickly. we currently have no base depth on natural trails and no major snow fall projected for weeks. if you go in late january, jay peak and stowe are your best bets for natural snow and powder if the weather pattern changes. so keep the above areas in mind for later in the season, but january isn't looking so hot... even if it snow, natural snow trails still won't be ready to go until february unless we get some major dumps late jan.

Yah - well it was either me or a nice Mormon girl! Easy choice. Plus we're only here for this year then it's off to find new digs ... and probably out west.

So, it's just a question of getting him his fixes for this year. One trip to Utah probably won't do it which is why checking out the Northeast is a necessary evil.

But thanks to all for all of the suggestions. I'd like to try something out here with more challenging terrain but I guess it is VERY forecast dependent, to say the least. Maybe we'll put this off to early Feb. :(

What do you all think about Stowe?

It depends on what type of skier he is. If he is basically a cruiser then take him to Stratton, Okemo or Snow. If he likes to rip up steeps and bumps then the mad river valley is a good choice with sugarbush and mad river glen right next to each other or stay in waterbury and you can be within a half hour of the bush, MRG Stowe and bolton, some pretty good skiing choices

Well, he loves powder stashes and steeps and esp. trees. Bumps not as much. Waterbury? I hadn't thought of that. Any suggestions on where to stay?

I would think if you're willing to travel a little further than VT, he might enjoy either Sunday River or Sugarloaf.

Stowe is a great place...somewhere any skier should visit once at least. Great mountain, great town. Lot's to do in addition to skiing.

But we need snow for you guys to appreciate the place. Without it, you might as well not make the drive.

Same goes for Jay Peak. But without the town and without lots to do other than skiing

Wait.
