Where to stay in Southern Vermont

A buddy and I are heading to Southern Vermont the first weekend in February. We both have the free tickets to Stratton, so we'll probably spend a day there unless the conditions are good enough to warrant ponying up for a more interesting mountain. Weather depending, we'll probably spend the other day at Magic or wherever we can find the best deal. Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

More importantly, we're trying to figure out where we should spend Saturday night (we'll probably drive up from NYC early Saturday morning). We're looking for a no-frills place within stumbling distance of at least one dive where we can get greasy food and cheap beer. Any recommendations on which town and/or which place?

Thanks!

I'm in a club that has a place at Mt. Snow. Only 30 minutes to Stratton, 40 to Magic. $20.00 Sunday thru Friday, $25.00 Saturday. Bunks and twins. Ski bum type of place. PM me if you are interested in something like this. Should be a quite weekend at the house.

My sister and I will also be going to Southern VT in a couple weeks. We both definitely have a dog so I am looking for a Pet friendly place. She lives in Boston so the driving distance might also be a factor. Anyone with dogs have any good ideas?

The family who runs this place is very nice and they have a few dogs around. Give them a call and ask for Joe. It's a few minutes south of Mount Snow.

reefer's club sounds pretty sweet. My club also rents a big old house close to both resorts (the house is in Weston -- ~10 min to Magic, 20-25 to Stratton and about 15 to Okemo and Bromley.) Standard club dorm accomodations spread out throughout the house and if it isn't a busy weekend you guys could probably have your own room. Great club, casual atmosphere.

20 bucks a night, 30 bucks for a guest (in case only one of you joins.) CSC club so members qualify for tons of discounts (Mt. Snow is $32 bucks for members that Saturday and Okemo is $35 that Sunday.) PM me if you're interested.

Re. traveling with the dog. When my wife and I travel up that way to ski and bring the mutt, we stay at the Motel 6 in Brattleboro. Two double beds, one for us and one for him. We just bring a big sheet to put over his bed. Not far from Snow and Stratton, and restaurants, etc. nearby. Only $5 for the dog.

Best Western in Bennington..

Stayed there before. Pretty good for the price and a cut above the budget motels, and the first place I check when looking for a good deal in that town (though these days I usually just go another hour up the road to my club's lodge.)

Also check out the Colonial Motel and Spa in Brattleboro -- pretty standard midrange motel but a stay includes use of their fitness facilities including an Olympic-sized indoor pool (local swim teams train there,) sauna and hot tub.

Both motels have wired high-speed internet unless they've added wi-fi in the past few months.

Both towns are ~45min - 1 hr from Stratton and Magic and about 1/2 hour from Mt. Snow. There's more to do @ night in Brattleboro than Bennington and to me it's a more interesting town (it's bigger.)

Oh yeah for sure the town of Brattleboro is better than Bennington and there's a real hippie bar in Bratt with gravity pours and dudes with big beards..but from where I live in eastern PA Bennington is a much quicker drive..for I-91 people I recommend Bellows falls or Springfield as places to stay with good access to Killington, Okemo, and Stratton..I forgot the name but there's a great chinese restaurant overlooking the Connecticut river in Bellows falls..stoke points if you name the restaurant before I find out about it on goggle..

edit..Joy Wah..best hot and sour soup..
