Resort or Ski Area: Whiteface Mtn.
Conditions: Spring, GORGEOUS
Trip Report:
Arrived early just prior to the lifts spinning to thin lots and the sun's blinding reflection off of a groomer working upper skyward. We dropped our things and headed out to the face lift for some warm ups.
The conditions were firm and fast in the morning. I was trying out for the first time, a pair of beater demos bought, some Rossi B83's. (Fat skis are new to me as I expand my skills, but these things cranked through it all though were tough to edge on the bullet proof stuff, sorry for the ski review). We logged a bunch of runs then hit the gondi to Little Whiteface and Excelsior etc. for some nice cruising. These trails became much better later after it softened some, with the exception of Crossover, which closed in the morning should have stayed that way. I left my friend to practice(newer skier) and headed to the summit. First run was down a groomed Upper Skyward.
Very nice if you managed to stay in the slough especially with these wide boys.
This too got sweet later(and busier).
I met back up with my buddy for my first go at The Wilmington. After a pleasant but long ride up, I found the trail to be as reviewed by others, classic New England skiing.
It could have used some more coverage and definitely something could be done to fix the left side drop, if for nothing but aesthetics. I HATE looking at snow fence, but I guess it's better than the alternative!
All in all I look forward to hitting this next year with better coverage, oh and thanks to ski patrol for picking up the rocks, he had a long day ahead of him:
The remainder of the day softened up beautiful, so much so we skied straight till nearly one o'clock stopping briefly at the mid for a quick bite then back out for a few more runs before my legs called it a day.
I love bluebird days at Whiteface.
