Date Skied: 3/7-3/8
Ski Area: Wildcat
Conditions: Packed Powder, powder in the trees, ice, and just about everything else you can think of in places
Trip Report: Wednesday was blue skys mid teens and no wind. It was a great day of skiing. Myself and a few friends started off taking the lynx trail from the top and then ended with catenary. Conditions were great with mild natural bumps throughout the trails. My next trip up I headed to Upper Wildcat and then ended with Bobcat. Upper had some decent bumps but there were ice patches throughout. This was probably the only place on the mountain where conditions were not ideal in some way. Next we headed to Lift Lion to Black Cat to Alley Cat to the Chutes. Lift Lion was great the snow was crusted powder and pretty easy to ski on. Dropping and skiing around the rocks, ledges, and bumps made for a fun ride all the way down. The next trip down we took the trails directly under the lift all the way down (I believe Topcat to Starline to Panther). It was the most intense marked trails I skied my two days there. Similar to Liftlion but with more drops and rocks. Also, we had to duck a rope at one point on starline. This section had powder mixed with ice and rocks and snow conditions varied from turn to turn. I took a pretty good wipe out towards the end of starline but controled my fall into powder. Panther to what turns into I believe Annie's Alley was a favorite of mine for this trip. The two trails had nice easy bumps with lots drops rocks to jump off of and a little cliff to drop from. The rest of the day we spent connecting various trails and ended a bunch of laps with the the Panther and Annie's Alley combo. Also found a little tree trail off of an entrance from Upper Catapult I believe althought from the map it looks like maybe we entered from Cat Cutoff. Glades next to Panther were nice and easy. One time we tried ducking the rope to do the closed Hairball trail. This was tough as it had a cliff in the middle with mandatory air. It dropped into powder but had rocks everywhere. Fun but understood why it was closed. All and all it was a great day.
Thursday: Was cloudy with temps in single digits with winds 45 mph. After one trip down My friend and I decided to check out the out of bounds entrance to Thompsons Brook from the Upper Polecat. It was just to cold to ski the regular mountain. I never skied this before but heard about it online. The woods and trails were AWESOME. Followed tracks to two trails. The first on the left of the woods had great powder still at points and bumps great little drops trees and a bunch of other cool stuff. It got pretty steep at points and we fell few times but it was just a great trail. Very tight so turns had to be quick it was Jay gladelike at times and then more of a skinny steep trail at times. It required ducking under a falled tree and dropping to steep uneven pitches. It was just alot of fun. The tracks that led to the left side required us to head through some tight trees and brush but led to a great skinny steep trail that was very similar to the previous trail but with less trees. Drops, bumps, and small ledges were everywhere it was just pure AWESOME. Both trails ended on the same flat and rolly trail that led to the bottom of polecat Did I think 4 or 5 laps on these trails then called it a trip. To me Wildcat is one of the more underrated mountains in the east. I think the terrain Rocks. The vibe and overall feel to me is somewhat similar to MRG. The old school atmosphere and trails just make it a great place. And the crowds were non existent. I never waited in a line. If you head there do this Thompson Brook area it makes this great place spectacular.
On a side note I did Bretton Woods on Tues as Wildcat was closed and the glades and powdery bumped trails there are def worth a trip if their all open.
