Yeti Cycles SB-66 Comp Complete Bike
When pricing new mountain bikes, exceeding the $3K price point is stupidly easy. Rather than slap rudimentary components on a dumbed-down chassis to hit that mark, Yeti Cycles' gone to great lengths to provide the best mix of quality and value in the SB-66 Comp Complete Bike.
The end result is Yeti's famed hydro-formed aluminum frame with established Switch Technology controlled by FOX EVO shocks, a largely SRAM X7 drivetrain, and DT Swiss M1900 wheels for rolling stock. Due to this, the SB-66 Comp can not only climb with aplomb and stomp technical descents, but also torment riders on bikes that cost significantly more.
At a glance, it's easy to mistake Yeti's Switch platform for a linkage-driven single pivot, but hidden underneath the blue anodized hardware is an eccentric pivot. Basically, a smaller pivot that's housed inside of a larger one -- as a result, this system provides control over the suspension action. In the beginning of the SB-66's six-inches of travel, the pivot rotates towards the rear axle to neutralize pedaling forces.
As the bike compresses into the bottom of the travel, the eccentric link changes direction, rotating toward the front axle. This rotation keeps the chainstays short under full-compression, which keeps weight centered in a neutral position relative to the wheelbase, adding up to a predictable feel and control. And, despite the sophistication of the Switch platform, it's easily serviced by home mechanics.
As for the upright link driving the rear shock, it works in conjunction with the eccentric main pivot to provide a firm, responsive ride that's still capable of erasing the roughest of trail chatter. And it has the added benefit of boosting the lateral stiffness of the frame, which keeps your bike tracking straight through G-outs, hard turns, and unpredictable terrain. The aluminum construction only enhances this, and keeps weight competitive at just over seven-and-a-half pounds with a shock for the frame.
The 66.2-degree head tube angle and 17-inch chainstays give you the high speed stability that you'd expect from a bike bearing the Superbike moniker, but it's still precise for climbing and technical turns. The Comp build runs an Evolution Series FOX 34 160mm fork, which pairs perfectly with the Evolution Series FLOAT CTD rear shock. The drivetrain and brakes are SRAM items, chosen for both value and durability. S1000 cranks transfer your power to the rear wheel, while X7 shifters and front derailleur, and a X9 rear derailleur, handle shifting duties.
The brakes are Avid Elixir 5s, and the stem, handlebar, and seatpost are all Truvativ T30 and T20items. These have been capped off with Yeti branded grips and saddle. And lastly, the wheels are DT Swiss M1900s that are wrapped in Maxxis Ardent tires.
