This has been a much discussed topic on Slate the last few weeks. The readers voted and the results are here: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat...brothers_films_slate_readers_cast_their_.html

I generally agree with the list although I haven't seen The Ladykillers or A Serious Man. I have 2 quibbles: I looove Miller's Crossing; unquestionably my favorite from the list and I feel it's a forgotten great film. Also I've always felt No Country For Old Men is way, way overrated. I've watched it twice and the last 15 minutes are so anticlimactic I walk away disliking the film as a whole.

What's your favorite?

I had no idea those were all Coen brothers movies. I'd have to put Raising Arizona at the top of my list (didn't know it was a Coen job), followed by Lebowski (my old boss was a Knutzen- I couldn't help but think "who the f**k are the Knutzens?" every time I saw him). No Country (again, didn't realize it was a Coen gig) was, I thought, good, but I don't remember the end, so maybe it was anticlimactic. Burn After Reading was sub par, the Ladykillers was awful (I really wanted to like it). Fargo I have no real opinion on. Oh Brother I don't think I've ever watched all teh way through.I haven't seen any of the others.

My overall viewpoint, then, of the Coen Brothers would appear to be "Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski are great movies. Really? They were made by the Coen Brothers? Interesting."

I'm one of the few people who actually likes Intolerable Cruelty

I've seen it once and recall liking it also. Clooney was awesome in Oh, Brother.."You two are just dumber than a bag of hammers."

Not a huge Coen Bros fan. I recall being disappointed with all their major hits (Fargo was okay, Lebowski whatever and No Country for Old Men I hated). Fargo was their best that I saw but again, disappointed compared to the hype.

I liked the big lebowski very much.

The film no country for old men was ok but not told as well as the novel. Then again that's often the case, right? I am a huge fan of Cormac Macarthy novels.....

Fargo was pretty good IMO

We are so not sharing popcorn when their next film comes out.

I dug Fargo...defintely more entertained than I thought I would be. William H. Macy and Buscemi were awesome.

Saw True Grit last week and didn't like it. At all. Moved far too slow for me and, it could have been the AV setup I was watching it on, but Jeff Bridges dialogue was next to impossible to make out. (I do think Matt Damon's character was likeable and I enjoyed the small amount of time he was on screen)
