How do snow reporting websites get updated?

There are a bunch of websites out there that have snow and trail reports (snocountry.com, onthesnow.com, etc.) Lots of TV stations have reports both on their websites and their broadcasts. How do they all get this information? Is it up to the snow reporting websites to contact the ski area to...

Is Ski Sundown worth the $55 mid-week lift ticket?

Looking to take a day off from work mid-week and go skiing. Based on snow reports, it looks like Ski Sundown has the best percentage of coverage within a reasonable driving distance for me (15 of 15 trails open). But $55 for a mid-week lift ticket seems kinda pricey for an area with only 625...

    What mountain is that?

Pardon my ignorance, but which mountain is pictured in the upper right corner of this website? I'm pretty sure it's not any of the 40 or so I've been to.

Wearing the lift ticket - Does this ever happen to you?

I'm referring specifically to the adhesive lift ticket which you attach to a wicket. It always seems like no matter which way I apply the lift ticket, the back of it is always showing as I approach the person checking lift tickets. I find myself always looking down to see which side is showing...

Earning My Turns - Any advice for a first-timer?

Looks like all of the places still open within reasonable driving distance are charging over $50 for a lift ticket. I don't want to whore myself out like that (have never paid more than $50 for a lift ticket.) Thinking about going down to Belleayre to hike and earn some turns. I've never...

    Ski Free On Your Birthday

I know that Belleayre offers free skiing on your birthday - are there any other areas that do the same? (pereferably within 4 hours of the Albany, NY area). Belleayre is one of my favorite mountains, but I've skied there quite a few times, and am looking to try something different. My...

So what's Mad River Glen like?

I see those bumper stickers all the time - "Mad River Glen - Ski It If You Can." Ooohh...sounds intimidating to an intermediate skier like me. I looked at their trail map, and they seem to have plenty of greens and blues - are they comparable in terms of difficulty level with greens and blues...

    Do you collect trail maps?

I could be wrong, but I suppose most people just throw their printed trail map away once they're done skiing for the day. Not me! I always grab a trail map (if available) the first time I visit a ski area, and I keep it afterwards. There's generally no need for me to take one on future...

Are there any ski areas which are crowded mid-week/non-holiday?

Yeah, I hate crowds and long lines. On weekends, I only go to ski areas which I know won't have crowds. I take vacation days to go skiing midweek at the areas I know are typically crowded on weekends. So, that being said, are there any ski areas in the Northeast which are crowded...

Date(s) Skied: Sunday, December 19, 2010 Resort or Ski Area: Maple Ski Ridge, Schenectady NY Conditions: Man made packed powder with grooming Trip Report: Time to show some love to a small, local ski area. I got to Maple Ski Ridge for first chair this morning and stayed for a little over...

How many calories are burned whil skiing?

How many calories are burned while skiing? A quick Google search gives results of anywhere from below 400 calories per hour to well over 600 calories per hour. I know that there are a lot of variables, such as height, weight, gender, age, etc. I assume that any number is based just on skiing...

What are some of the newest ski areas in the Northeast?

I've only been skiing for 5 years, so this is a topic I'm not too familiar with. It seems like most ski areas have been around forever. What are some of the newest ski areas in the Northeast? Are there any that have opened in the 90's or even the 2000's? (I'm not talking about areas that...

    Killington this weekend? 11/20-21

Just wondering if the triple at Killington has a singles line and if it's appreciably shorter than the regular line on weekends this time of year.

    Season Passes

I'm just curious what percentage of AZ'ers get season passes. Since many of you seem to be avid skiers, I'd bet the percentage is pretty high. This will be my fifth year skiing, but the first in which I've made the plunge to get a season pass. Now granted, it's only to Maple Ski Ridge, a...

    Rockstar Parking

I saw someone else use the term "Rockstar Parking" in a thread a few months ago, so I'm going to borrow it from you as the title for my thread. (Urban Dictionary defines Rockstar Parking as "Parking up close to the venue being visited.") General rule of thumb is the larger the ski area, the...

Poll: For those of you who ski AND ride

Couldn't find a topic like this in my quick search, so here goes: 2 questions for those of you who do both skiing and snowboarding: (1) Which do you think is easier? (2) Which did you learn first? Obviously, I'm trying to see if there is any sort of correlation between which you think is...

What's the closest ski area to you that you've never been to?

For me, it would be Stratton, at about 1 hour 40 mins from Albany, NY. I think I've been to every other ski area within 2 hours of me (and plenty of others much further away as well.) I'll probably hit Stratton someday, but I'll plan on midweek with some sort of discount.
