When i Travel with my skis on my roof rack two things happen.
1. They get dirty as hell from the road and
2. they get black rubber marks on the base and upper part- ( would never have noticed but GF has white bottomed skis and the rubber mark is soo clear)
I was thinking of wrapping them in that clear saran wrap like stuff that you get at the hardware store- any thoughts- any way to prevent this short of getting a carrying box?

I put mine in a bag first. Use a cheap bag thought because it will get wet and dirty. I found some on ebay for about 25 - 30.

Buy a box. You CAN get them cheap. I paid $75 for my Thule box. It needed some repair which cost me $25 in pars from Thule. Just cruise Craiglist. It is WELL worth it!

Ski bag it. Just secure any straps or they will whack annoying on your roof. They also make binding covers that zip just around the bindings, but the boards will still be exposed to dirt and road salt. Get a ski bag.

Saran wrap? Sorry....couldn't resist... ;)

my skis and poles are ALWAYS in a ski bag wether they are in the Thule box or on the ski rack...makes it alot easier carrying everything across parking lots and it protects your gear

I put mine in the car and the passengers are strapped to the rack. Sometimes I put them inside a passenger bag.

Huh...I put my ski gear in the car, my luggage on the rack, and passengers are tied to the rear bumper and dragged.

They go without a bag...no sense ruining a perfectly good bag.

Good advice all. I'm going to look into the ski box and the ski bag.
Can always count on the AZers.

My skis drive the car and I strap myself to the rack.

I'm tempted to get a Thule Box, but I'm concerned about gas mileage. For now, I just gator my bindings.
