Area Skied: Jiminy Peak, M.A
Date Skied: March 11th, 2006
Surface Conditions: Frozen granular (early)spring conditions, thin and bare areas.
I started out the day arriving at Jiminy Peak at 9:00am and had enough time to have a quick breakfast and prepare to ski for the day. I meet BeanoNYC outside of the Crane lodge at 9:30am and had enough time while waiting for ALLSKING to take a fast run down Left Bank with my son.
Left Bank was just starting to soften up from the previous nights freeze and was fun to ski until we got to Grouse Run which had alot of thin spots and exposed ice due to snowmelt.
I meet up with Dave and his wife along with BeanoNYC around 10:00am which was when my son had to start his 1 hour lesson.
We skied together down Left Bank to Wild Turkey which was not quite soft enough for a pleasant ski experience because it had a mix of small chunks of frozen granular snow along with some slush near the bottom.
Our runs down North Glade, West Way and Grand Slam where very pleasant with nice spring snow in most places. There was a short mogul practice run just off the Grand Slam trail for us to ski some moguls, nothing long, maybe 200 feet or so, but still fun. We switched over to the Summit Triple for a short time to avoid standing in the long line at the 6 pack.
My son finished his lesson and we all skied down Whitetail which had just opened a short time before and had good snow except for some boilerplate near the top of the run. Warren skied it without incident, but more slowly than the rest of the group and Warren and I waited at the bottom of the 6 pack chair to rejoin the group.
Warren tired of skiing around 12:45pm and Dave and his wife, BeanoNYC and I took some nice runs down Jericho and Whitetail which also had delayed openings until the sun softened things up around noon. I stopped skiing around 1:30 becasue we had to start home, but I still had an enjoyable day.
ALLSKING and his wife along with BeanoNYC on Jericho:

Thin conditions on 180:
The lower part of the mountain, especially the 180 trail had very thin conditions for early March. My wife overheard talk in the ski school area that the mountain will not be making any more snow this year and that March 26th will be the last day of the season. With all the sunshine and warm weather the snow is melting fast, the Northern Berkshires have NO natural snowcover left.
