Area Skied: Jiminy Peak, M.A

Date Skied: March 11th, 2006

Surface Conditions: Frozen granular (early)spring conditions, thin and bare areas.

I started out the day arriving at Jiminy Peak at 9:00am and had enough time to have a quick breakfast and prepare to ski for the day. I meet BeanoNYC outside of the Crane lodge at 9:30am and had enough time while waiting for ALLSKING to take a fast run down Left Bank with my son.

Left Bank was just starting to soften up from the previous nights freeze and was fun to ski until we got to Grouse Run which had alot of thin spots and exposed ice due to snowmelt.
I meet up with Dave and his wife along with BeanoNYC around 10:00am which was when my son had to start his 1 hour lesson.

We skied together down Left Bank to Wild Turkey which was not quite soft enough for a pleasant ski experience because it had a mix of small chunks of frozen granular snow along with some slush near the bottom.

Our runs down North Glade, West Way and Grand Slam where very pleasant with nice spring snow in most places. There was a short mogul practice run just off the Grand Slam trail for us to ski some moguls, nothing long, maybe 200 feet or so, but still fun. We switched over to the Summit Triple for a short time to avoid standing in the long line at the 6 pack.

My son finished his lesson and we all skied down Whitetail which had just opened a short time before and had good snow except for some boilerplate near the top of the run. Warren skied it without incident, but more slowly than the rest of the group and Warren and I waited at the bottom of the 6 pack chair to rejoin the group.

Warren tired of skiing around 12:45pm and Dave and his wife, BeanoNYC and I took some nice runs down Jericho and Whitetail which also had delayed openings until the sun softened things up around noon. I stopped skiing around 1:30 becasue we had to start home, but I still had an enjoyable day.

Thin conditions on 180:

The lower part of the mountain, especially the 180 trail had very thin conditions for early March. My wife overheard talk in the ski school area that the mountain will not be making any more snow this year and that March 26th will be the last day of the season. With all the sunshine and warm weather the snow is melting fast, the Northern Berkshires have NO natural snowcover left.

Sounds good. I know Charlie had a bad back so that is why he was not there. Andyzee did not show?

Not as far as I know. It was the first real nice warm weekend day of the year, so maybe people had other plans for the day. It is amazing how fast Southern New York is turning green. There is green grass most of the way up to Jiminy due to the warm weather and all the snow from last week is gone.

Cool! Glad you guys got out. Yesterday must have been a fine day to ski. I was thinking about you all a lot. Wish you had a better turn-out. I'll be there next year!

S0 3/26, eh? I'll have to try to get up there before then....

Ouch, no more snowmaking? It's supposed to get much colder this week, so I'm suprised they already put away the guns. I know Wawa will start making more snow Tuesday night, and their base isn't half as bad as Jiminy.

What's so surprising about no more snowmaking? It's the middle of March! I find it amazing that Wa Wa is making snow. Where did you hear that? BTW, Jiminy has some of the best and most abundant snowmaking in Mass that I've seen. Never been to Wa Wa though. Do they make significantly more snow?

Part of today's report from Killington, hope they're not kidding:

Looking forward - Next week's forecast predicts colder temperatures and scattered snow showers to arrive on Monday. One thing you can count on when the colder weather hits is for snowmaking to pick up right where they left off.

Wachusett, if it is cold enough, will make snow in April. They like to stay open until the 2nd Sunday in April typically. When I was at Jiminy, I saw the summit trails had a DEEP base. However, there were already bare spots at the base. I guess Jiminy has a more limited budget or something. Wawa always makes snow this late in the season.

As much fun as it was to ski at Jiminy Peak yesterday, the base depths on most trails where very modest with alot of thin and bare spots near the base.

I am not a frequent skier of this place, yesterday was my 15th day there, but Ski Sundown for example, had MUCH deeper base depths.

The mountain yesterday looked alot like it should have been April 11th, not March 11th. If Jiminy does not make snow on 180, they will be in trouble if more snow melts.

I agree with Greg, I would doubt that they will make more snow this year, what for?, the season is almost over and the new snow will melt soon anyway. Perhaps they will spot fix some trails, but I would be suprised to see more.

I am at work in NYC right now and a few of the trees on the east side are green already. I think most people will be thinking about other activities than skiing in the weeks to come.

Wow, what a busy weekend! I just got home now from Manhattan. Loafer pretty much summed it up but was nice enough to leave out my embarrasing fall on the little mogel run (thanks Loaf) Mrs. ALLSKIINGwas a little worried about my shoulder but was happy to hear that I hurt nothing but my pride. Anyhoo, after we said goodbye to Loafer, ALLSKIING and I took the six pack back up to the top and grabbed a quick bite to eat. We headed down Jericho and made our way back up. I forget which trail we took for our final run together. Maybe Dave will remember. I met up with some friends at our scheduled 2:30 and they asked me to have a  with them. ALLSKIING still had another half hour of skiing in him so I had to bid him and Mrs. ALLSKIING a fond adieu. I grabbed that beer with my friends and got three runs in with, well one of them. The others took too long to gear up. We warmed up on westway twice then jumped on upper fox.

Pictures coming soon!

It was great meeting ALLSKIING, Mrs. ALLSKIING (I'm gonna send you two a pm next time we go to the vineyards) Little ALLSKIING, Baby ALLSKIING, Loafer, Mrs. Loafer and, of course, Warren. Good skiing, with great company. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone real soon. What a great bunch of people we have on this website!

Got back home around 6:30. Great time...really nice to meet BeanoNYC and Loafer89. Small turn out but still a great time. Nice soft corn snow and a blue bird day on Sat. Sunday we skied until 12:00 which worked out great since thats when the rain started. Jericho was the run of the weekend. My daughter did well and was doing laps off the six pack:beer:

Thanks! It's something that I have been cognizant of since you mentioned it to me....every little bit helps. ;) I still get lazy with the hands sometimes, but not when there's a camera on me! Yep the pics are great indeed. I don't think mine turned out as good as Loaf's or ALLSKIING, but I'll post them when I transfer them from my camera.

Sorry I couldn't make it at the last minute - my wife hadn't been feeling too well Friday night and when I woke up bright and early Saturday she was worse so I had to stay home with the kids. Loafer89, I called your cell phone around 8:30 a.m. or so and left a voicemail, was the only way I could get in touch with one of you - hope you didn't wait around for me.

Looks like it was a fun time, wish I could've made it! Good conditions for the most part, except for 180 which really looks terrible - hope they can recover later this week, I'd like to get out there before the season's over.
