Date Skied: 12/15
Resort or Ski Area: Belleayre Mountain
Conditions: Spring, sunny in a.m., partly cloudy in p.m., temps upper 40s.
Trip Report:
We arrived at Belleayre at approximately 8:30 for the mountain's first Customer Appreciation Day - all lift tickets $15. On the lifts by 8:45. The conditions report said that there were seven trails open, but we knew that really meant only 2 black trails from the top of the hill (each of those two are broken into two sections - basically upper and lower, and there is a third little branch-off trail that doesn't really count for anything), and 2 true-beginner trails at the bottom part of the hill...for a total of "7". The rest of the mountain was completely bare.
The cover on the two black trails (Wanatuska and Onteora) was very good despite the recent weather. Wanatuska was groomed in the morning and was nice and soft. It got a little mashed-potatoey later in the day when it warmed up even more, but the conditions kept things interesting. Ontereo had huge whales on the skiier's left, and smaller moguls on skiier's right. That trail had a good pitch and the soft snow made it fun.
We skiied until about 1 pm. The snow was holding up pretty well, but was starting to get a little brown. No real grass patches showing through, just a little dirt mixing in. Crowds were pretty light all day - skiied right up to the lift each time.
All in all - great day to break in the new boots and get out there on the cheap to enjoy the beautiful weather.
