Choosing between a Montana mish mosh (big sky, Indy places, whitefish, with a lot of driving) vs a repeat of last years banff revelstoke combo. Leaning toward Canada it’s just so cheap and I like Canada a lot
I drove by Lost Trail Powder Mountain a couple years ago and I’d definitely ski there if I were bouncing around Montana. It’s got some really fun looking terrain.

Did those 3 last year. Fresh powder all day at Blacktail. Snowbowl is great these days with the 2 new lifts. Whitefish was a bust, too cold to open anything above the lower HSQ.

With that said, I just booked a flight and finalized the Canada trip. It’s just so much less expensive and less driving. The Bozeman to big sky daily schlep is a lot, and covering whitefish to big sky in one trip (with flights at Missoula) also was a lot. Staying in big sky is too expensive and also kinda boring. Banff and revelstoke and maybe an audible to red, sun peaks, kicking horse. Lots of options. Very very affordable to be there for 2 weeks.

How much is a flight to Calgary? I feel like that would add a few hundred compared to a domestic flight.

$650 direct on air canada, from newark. it was more expensive and not direct to go to albany. all the missoula routes were similarly priced. newark to missoula with a transfer was doable in the high $400s.

i'm looking at $500 car, $650 flight, $1600 hotels - $2750. banff has a lot of sort of dated hotels that are nicer than motels, have pools/gyms, and tend to have a shitty lobby restaurant. i have a one bedroom loft suite with a kitchentte and a balcony for $900 usd for 5 nights. i have a motel room in revelstoke in a clean recently renovated place i have stayed before for $700 for 5 nights.

still need to book a hotel for the last 2 nights. last night will be a very cheap calgary airport hotel. second to last just keeping it flexible for now.

food is cheaper in canada. weed is very cheap. alcohol is expensive and i dont drink much.

I have a week at the bird booked mid feb. It was pricey ngl but the family picked it and its the last year with entire family for awhile as oldest is heading to college next year.

Canada was so inexpensive last year. I will try to book another week solo back to revelstoke if conditions line up with a break in kids sports schedule.

Not sure if I can afford to do any western traveling this winter, but I have Colorado on the back of my mind to check out Vail, Breck, etc while I have Epic.

However, this Canada discussion has intrigued me. I've always dreamt of Whistler, so for shits and giggles I priced out a flight from Boston to Vancouver in late February and...there's round trip flights for under $300. I'll be damned. Maybe Whistler isn't as much of a pipe dream as I thought.

Idk why I always thought flights to western Canada from the eastern US were super expensive to the point that it would be worth driving to Montreal or Toronto just to get cheaper airfare.

On second thought...most of the lodging at Whistler makes Jackson Hole look like a truck stop. Good lord.

Your epic pass is good at fernie and kicking horse as far as I recall. Both have amazing terrain and are far less popular and full of schmucks compared to whistler. Both have very cheap lodging. Fernie is an actual awesome ski town. Golden BC is a shitty train town.

Completely agree with Kusty's comments here. I think interior BC has the best skiing in all of North America and both Fernie and KH are awesome and so are all the other places. Whistler is worth a visit though, it is mind bendingly vast and has incredible amount of terrain. We stayed with a friend who has a condo there, so lodging was not a problem and we had a tour guide since he knows the mountain which was a really big deal. The place is just huge!
Speaking of lodging, we are planning on road tripping to Le Massiff, wondering if anyone has lodging recommendations there.

Us too! I always find very cheap lodging at Mont Sainte Anne and drive to Le Massif each day. Last time for MLK weekend 2024, we got a 1 bedroom condo with a living room and kitchen for $60 usd/night. It was only about a 25-30 minute drive and it’s a straight shot. There’s also way more stuff to do nearby MSA than Le Massif after skiing

I'd go for it with Whistler since you have the Epic and be as selective with dates as possible for crowd avoidance. I haven't been since way before Vail bought it. All skiers should see it once.

Was going to post the exact same. My first trip there was 2019 and we got a very nice condo with a view of MSA for short money. That was such a good trip.

i have 12/27-31 cleared for skiing. 12/21-26 = in-laws xmas. 27-31 = me time. 1-3 = fiance time. really nice end of year break tho!

i have so many hotels booked. i got a sugarbush hotel, a white river junction shithole, a lincoln nh shithole, a gorham nh shithole, and a nice place at SR. i should throw some quebec on the pile. ive got til about 12/22 to decide.

there's a small music venue/club on our street in kingston and their NYE party is h.jon benjamin (archer, bob's burgers) DJ'ing 'sad songs only'. we're going to that. i need to be home by 9 PM 12/31.

If you can go later in the season, some of the condos are dirt cheap. We stayed just above the Blackcomb base for about $150 a night and that wasn't nearly the cheapest place. There's A LOT of condos, so the supply becomes much great than the demand. Ideally go the last week when both mountains are open.
