Wow, thanks for posting these. I really can't wait to see what this place has in store; I've done a ton of skiing out West but just heard about this place recently.

Is there anything around the mountain for restaurants or bars? I looked a Google Maps and it looks like its just in the middle of nowhere.
Yes very remote. Salmon probably best bet for restaurants/bars/gas. I drove up from SLC and hit Lost Trail on my way to Schweitzer. There was about 90 mins before arriving at Salmon on 28-93 when I didn't see hardly any signs of human habitation. Saw a pair of moose though

Japan 1st week of March. Niseko and Furano. Don't want to say how much $$$, because it's a lot.

Fulfilling a life-long dream for my oldest son of skiing in Japan. Took him and his brother to too many Warren Miller & TGR ski flicks when they were young. My oldest was entranced by the scenes they showed of skiing in Japan and got it in his head at a very young age that he wanted to ski there. When he started college and was struggling a bit - I had to have a tough conversation with him to tell him that if he screws it up and flames out - that's it, mom & dad aren't paying for any more schooling and he would be on his own. But that was such a negative message that I wanted to offset it with something positive. So I came up with the idea of saying that if he does complete his degree in a timely manner that I would find a way to put together a Japan ski trip for him. He not only completed college, he also got a graduate degree and he was an Academic All American and the "Athlete of the Year" for his school's athletic programs (all sports). Needless to say - I am happy to pay this debt.

On second thought...most of the lodging at Whistler makes Jackson Hole look like a truck stop. Good lord.

Lodging can get expensive depending on the week and days selected. If you avoid weekends, you can save some money while avoiding the worst of the crowds.

Something to consider when budgeting is you do not need a car rental for Whistler. Everything you need is walkable and parking is expensive. The buses from Van and YVR are clean, cheap, timely and plentiful. I use them anytime I am staying overnight and I live in Van.

Your epic pass is good at fernie and kicking horse as far as I recall. Both have amazing terrain and are far less popular and full of schmucks compared to whistler.

Very true. More people = more schmucks.

They all have their pluses and minuses. I love Kicking Horse, it’s honestly one of my faves, but it’s not very fun if it hasn’t snowed in a while. It can also feel small if you aren’t into hiking. Whistler at least has world-class groomers to fall back on when the off piste isn’t worth skiing, and Whistler feels expansive and endless by comparison.

Fernie is also great and has some incredible terrain. However, it’s sometimes subject to high freezing levels without any reliable alpine to escape to (unlike Whistler). Polar Peak doesn’t open all that often.

Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with any of them.
