Jay Peak 2-3-07

Temperature: 7 degrees
Surface: Powder / Packed powder
Sunny Skies/ scattered clouds snow showers late afternoon

New snow 8-10" fell the night before.

Caught many first tracks in the woods at Jay Peak, Conditions were the best of the year so far with much of the snow over the boot and a few over the knee where high wind blew it into the woods. Winter finally showed up for day!

Is that first picture the typically windblown Northwest Passage? That trail never fills in. They should close the upper part permanently as they did with the trail behind the tram house.

It is the Northwest passage, a little extra work but the lower part was untouched and deep for a nice short run with face shots.

What trail/glade is the last picture? I've never been real glade snowboarding, seeing as I ride pretty much exclusively at Belleayre and the last few years there wasn't enough snow really. I really, REALLY want to hit up Jay for a weekend or something soon. Opinions? Nice TR.

The last pic was from Valhalla a double black, easy to get to just need to take the tram up can't miss the entrance on skiers left. Lots of good skiing on Green Beret and the Vermonter.... well in short it is all good and study the map for good access points.

Valhalla might be getting you salivating but probably not a good idea for learning the glades. If you make it up to Jay Peak, Beaver Pond, Stateside Glade, and Bonaventure Glades are all sparse low angle glades good for learning. Buckaroo and Buck Woods are good options as well for learning the trees. Jay has some of the more sparse and easier glades around, in my opinion. Good mountain to go to if you are just learning. They don't mark double blacks though, so you will have to be the judge of your own abilities from the entrance of each glade. Most glades start out tight and then open up, so you can usually get a good read based on the entrance.

I tend to forget that, you are VERY correct. I learned on Valhalla and Beyond beaver Pond and the Dip so my love hate relationship started early. Big Jay is next. Have you done it? Interested in doing it?

It is certainly on the to do list once we get some more snow. I have yet to use my skins at Jay since the lifts started turning, much to my chagrin.

exactly, I was up at Jay two day's after your pic in your avatar. No skins boot packed the entire way... fun as hell! Went out and got some Fritschi Titanal III's and some skins and I really want to conquer Big Jay. The research I have seen is crazy and they have been cutting over there, you probably heard about the National Forest getting pissed. Wind blown is it's friend and a good powder day of 12" may mean 24" + over there, hmmmmmm March maybe? www.jaypeakvideo.com

They closed a trail? What was it called? Was it good? Does anyone ski it nowadays?
When you walk out of the tram haus facing Big Jay it is the short little trail on your right. It was closed becasue it didn't hold snow, and if I recall correctly becasue there was some fencing or something on the side that would stab you if you hit it... :smash: I can't recall the name of it.

The trail was called SisBomBa and was not closed because it didn't hold the snow. I have skied it with great coverage and it was still closed. Ski patrol always kept it closed because it created a dangerous intersection on Northway where it ended near the top of Ulers. The never fixed the fencing because they had no intention of opening it. Even in past years when they claimed 100% open it was still closed. When they added the new trail for the new condos they removed it from the map keeping the trail count the same.

Thanks for clearing up the facts! Anyone know what happened to that Jay Peak forum?

Its been 5 years

:spread: I'm going back to Jay Peak Feb 17. I have not been there in about 5 years. Some of my best skiing days have been there. How is the "new" lift next to the tram? Where does it take you and what trails does it access? Also, has anybody skiied the saddle? Its not on the map. I did it once...I met someone who was shown the saddle by a local and he took me down it. You have to take your skiis off and hike up the the spot where you drop in. What an intense run! By far my favorite mountain in the east. Jay #1, Sugarbush #2, Stowe #3, Sunday River #4, Killington #5. Looking forward to getting back into the woods at Jay.
