[thread="17439"]Last year's thread[/thread]. A few things I would like to accomplish:
  • Better hands. I've realized my hands are too far apart and I'm doing a lot of "card dealing".
  • Learn to drive the hips forward in the bumps. I'm still crouching big time to compensate.
  • Learn to take air with more confidence and consistently throw down old school cheesy tricks.

I freaking love big GS turns on fat skis through crud...I want to get even fatter skis(my fats are 88mms) and really bust through the piles of Crud..I also want to carve lower on race skis on the hardpack and get a more areodynamic tuck..I also want to get better at straightlining bumps..

So let's pick a goal and use this thread to discuss how to achieve it... There are so many different tools and techniques out there, it would be great to here what everyone finds that works for them.

Yes, welcome. Well, for the driving the hips forward in the bumps thing, it's kind of a motion similar to something you do with a girl in private. GSS wouldn't know anything about it.

  • Speed WITH control (big mistake last year...got the speed, hurt myself because I wasn't in control)
  • Get out of the backseat
  • Ditch the pole plants for now since I was told mine look awkward and aren't helping
  • RELAX while skiing... a friend at A-basin explained to me why I was out of alignment when skiing and how to remedy that

I did accomplish a lot last season... but I felt like I took some steps backwards after the partial ACL tear. At least at the rate I'm going now, I'll be in MUCH better shape when I enter the next ski season.

There are some great names for that technique on the Ski Diva. :D  I believe TrekChick has a gem to share.

hip motion

I've been using a Wobble Board. Stand with feet evenly spaced and right below your hips on the wobble board, You then roll the board from edge to edge, using your knees and hips. So you use the round shape of the front of the wobble board to tune your hip movement. This way you can get use to the hip movement while watching tv, then you don't have to think about it when you are skiing...

Per usual, my goals are mainly fitness related. Losing twenty pounds would be the best thing that could happen to my skiing.

Specific goals - enter the air again. I was pretty into catching air and doing old school tricks in High School and then for whatever reason stopped in my mid-20's. Now I flail in the air. I'd like to regain my comfort and confidence and spend a bit more time off the ground.

Yes welcome to the board. Ok, I know this is something I have to/need to work on but, how do you push your hips forward, while going over the top of a big ball, without getting left in the backseat? Push your hips forward of what? Your feet, your upperbody, etc...? Is push your hips forward interchangeable with pull your feet back? The one item I read about in Mogulskiing.net was to be on the balls of your feet from the bottom of absorption thru extension. This I am anxious to try.

Riding switch. I can make it down anything riding switch, but I look like a gaper. Probably not that bad, but I feel like one compared to how I ride regular. Im thinking center mounting my old Burton Custom, instead of the directional stance I have on my Never Summer and Illuminati will be the biggest aid to this, that and just doing it more often.

Relaxing & staying loose are very important, especially when falling. If you can keep your body relaxed and loose you would be amazed what kind of fall / crash you can walk away from without a scratch. And belive me, Randi and I both know from experience. The big reason people get hurt in a fall / crash is becuase they get tense and the force of the impact is localized in the body. When you are relaxed the force is spread out though your entire body. This past year when you got hurt on Temptor I knew you were in trouble and were going to get hurt before you even fell. When you hit that first swale your entire body got very tense, almost rigid. As soon as I saw that I knew you were going to fall and it was going to hurt.

The most important thing I have learned from 13 years of martial arts training is how to stay relaxed and take a fall. I haven't been in a fight in a VERY long time, but with skiing and mountain biking falling is something I do alot of.

Hit up one of Sundown's. Make a weekend out of it and spend the other day in Vermont somewhere....

I might..the one in January seems cool..hard icy bumps seperate the men from the boys..it's not the same as the effortless spring goose stomping where you can just plow through the crud.

Yeah, that was a bad fall. Embarrassing, too. I was reminded while at A-basin that I need to loosen up so that I stay in better alignment and when I do fall, it won't hurt as much. It's hard to loosen up though when you've already hurt yourself pretty badly falling ... it's that anticipation of pain. Totally mental (just like the other problems I was having while at A-basin). What I need to do is take a day when there's some soft, fresh snow and just throw myself down a few times. :)

As you become a better skier..the falls become more spectacular. When I was first starting to ski..a fall was a simple slide on my butt. Now I usually get catapaulted..usually to my left side...self arrest skills are something I'd like to work on better..in case I take a high speed fall and start sliding towards the woods, lift towers, light poles, or snowmaking gear.
