I've had a couple great winters here in Colorado and love it here but for whatever reason am toying with the idea of landing in Tahoe. I can't really explain, just sort of a gut feeling. I guess I can't leave good enough alone. Am I foolish...crazy...restless?

By "landing in Tahoe", do you mean spend a winter there or just visit?

I'm going next month to scope things out...but I meant move there in the fall for good. I can never use the word settle, that would be silly.

Really I just want to live in Switzerland-that would be permanent.

Would love to visit and it would be a pretty ideal location to be out west. Obviously great skiing, but if you ever need a break from winter, it's a easy drive to the ocean and warmer weather.

Yeah but the storms are bigger, it sticks to steeper lines, and makes for good landings. I skied there several years ago and really liked the terrain.

yup.... Tahoe rocks!

Go big...

I'm more of a who you're with rather then where you are type of person. That said, if theres nobody you care about leaving behind I'd say go with your gut feeling.

Family is all back in New England I do miss them a ton, but they visit here and I visit home...maybe not enough. Two weeks a year is better than nothing.

We met six years ago and she had only been twice in her life, now she totally hooked-wants nothing to do with a 9-5 anymore. Just in the last two years the progression has floored me-aggresively skiing legit double black terrain, I'm so proud of her. I may have to marry her someday.

You already know I'm a fan of the Blue World. Julie and I were out the for close to two weeks at the beginning of March and got 8 feet. I say go for it. Spend some time in South Lake, Tahoe City, and Truckee and decide what would be the best home base for you. Job opportunities may be better on the south shore. Either way, I look forward to possibly seeing you out there next year. It's been far-too long since you, Bob, and I closed out the season at Wildcat a couple years ago...

Tahoe is an amazing place. I'd say roughly 90% of the time either the snow or the weather is great. The storms are huge (multiple feet) when they come (one of the only places where are there days when I actually think you may need truly fat skis), and its usually sunny and warm between the storms. The weather pattern also makes a real year-destination. There aren't really the icky shoulder seasons that you get in other mountain towns. You can typically ski well into May, and by that time the weather is warm and the rain is done until October.

Don't know how much time you've spent out there, but there's a huge variation in the feel of the various towns that you could potentially live in. If you haven't already, spend some time getting to know the area--at least north shore vs. south shore--before you plop down somewhere.

Wherever you end up, though, its tough to go wrong out there...

I took a hard look at relocating back in 1999 and 2000. Real estate was going crazy back then and it's now completely unaffordable unless you have a 7 digit net worth. You aren't going to be able to buy property on Tahoe service economy W-2 income. If your frame of reference is metro-NYC or metro-Boston suburban real estate in the high end towns, I think you'll find prices are comparable. A year ago, $1 million didn't buy much. No telling what it's doing now since nothing is listed at realistic prices and nothing is selling. If you make real money, you'll get slaughtered by California state income taxes so it's worth your while to take a hard look at establishing residence in Nevada. I know people who found it cheaper to buy a 2nd home in Reno. They live in up on the golf course in Truckee the majority of the time but claim Nevada as their residence to avoid California taxes. They use the Reno house before taking business flights and on the shoulder seasons when you can't play golf in Truckee.

There are also a lot of people from the Bay Area who have a Nevada residence in Incline Village to escape California taxes. I looked at that but it's just too far from real skiing. Diamond Peak is really small.

On a relative scale, Colorado is inexpensive unless you are buing right at a resort.
