+ 1. Too much for too little.

It has been said several times by K regulars that they have lost much of their Boston market share to Maine. Just taking opening weekend last year as a brief snapshot; it would appear that value is the reason.

Well, had the price been $50, it would have still been steep for me, but that was my pricepoint because I was so jonesin'. Instead, $0 from me and I am local. I just waited and went to SB.

In the meantime, I went to SB, hiked around, went to the shop and bought some stuff....

I too find $50 steep for opening day. I try not to pay more than that for a day ticket even peak season. Though I will always gladly pay full price on a powder day, even at Stowe.

That's why it's $50.00.

The price point kept quite a few people away. Killington used to be a total zoo when they were the only mountain open in the fall. The new owners seem to have a "quality over quantity" strategy. It's way better than when ASC took the place discount. They just need to keep working on a lot of the quality aspects like food & customer service which are still at uber-low ASC levels. If $50.00 keeps people away, so much the better from where I sit.

It's a balance though and only their bean counters can answer it. How much money are they willing to lose early season by pricing people off the hill? How much ill will are they creating by charging double that of Sunday River, perhaps it's largest competitor for Boston skiers.

If I was a pass holder I'd love the lower traffic IF management was discouraged by the money loss and continue to open early each year. Or even more importantly, if that lost revenue forces a decision to shut down in the spring a weekend early. That would be my greatest fear if I were local.

Actually, we charged the early season rate, which I believe was $64. Full rate started for the Holiday week in December.
I stand corrected.
so says the season pass holder.

You can't have it both ways. You make an argument to have the place open early for a thousand day pass purchases, then applaud a higher price making the place less crowded.

I seem to recall Killington charging $60 when Sunday River was charging $25 for greater terrain. I clearly remember that the price seemed like they were gouging people, which is an overall problem with their image right now.......kids program, lodge food etc.
1000 was a bit high, just a SWAG. Not arguing that the ticket price was set correctly, but I'll happily reap the benefits.

Really, early season, it's probably the way to K to go, though. Higher prices offsets the lower ticket sales and keeps chaos in check. Get slammed for high prices but offers a better experience. I dunno. Not my field of expertise to weigh the tradeoffs.

Not sure if any mountain is going to get a thousand skiers at $80 for early season skiing. Most early /late season skiers are passholders not day tickets.

I disagree for early season..last year K-mart charged $65 for opening day and people came from all over the northeast and the mid-atlantic..and when you are the first to open and last to close..passholders from other mountains will spend the $$$$ on a day ticket..

Yeah, they charged full rate last year from day one. Helped alleviate the bowling alley issues, at least.

It was $65..not full rate..better to have 1,000 people at $65 than 2,000 at $35..and after not skiing for several months..$65 is chump change for a WROD

Check the math on the first one. $5k difference in ticket revenue for one day is a lot to leave.

And as to the second comment, remember that the competition (with less terrain granted) only charged $25. If you lived on the North Shore of Boston, with both SR and K being similar distances, you'd be tempted to choose SR.

that would be me and the decision is quite simple. It's 2:45 door to door for both mountains. My ski season starts in Maine every year.

Supply/Demand curve. Econ 101. It has nothing to do with what other areas are charging. If it's a WROD at 65$, then they still aren't charging enough.

Curious what your justification was for that price when Sunday River was charging $25 opening weekend?

Wasn't that Sunday River's "Tin Can Roundup" deal where you got a big discount if you showed up with three cans of food? It's not like $25.00 is their usual early season day ticket price.

I skied Sunday River on that Saturday 2 years ago during Tin Can roundup because the evil POWDR bastids didn't spin the lifts. I left around 11:00 when all the yahoos showed up. It was easily as bad as any Killington white ribbon of death I've ever experienced. I saw absolutely no evidence of that great "Sunday River vibe" people talk about. I saw Masshole human pinball that rivaled any New Yorker human pinball on Killington's lower Bunny Buster.

IIRC the first weekend was $25 with no strings, except maybe a Halloween Costume. Paging Bob R....

nope, not referring to Tin Can

straight up opening weekend pricing. I believe Tin Can was a weekend or two later. I recall not going to Tin Can last season because of rain.
