The shop at Wachusett is good too if you ski there. Don't bother with a race tune unless you actually race. Get a stone grind once or twice a season. Get a diamond stone to maintain your edges in between.

I second the recos on Strands, the Wachusett ski shop and getting a diamond stone to do sharpening/deburring in between trips to the store. If you're not going into doing your own tuning and waxing, you may want to pick up a tub of rub-on wax and cork. Good for getting some wax into those bases in the afternoon, especially in the spring.

Andy: my kitchen beats your attic. Beer in the fridge while I tune.

wachusett or strands

I use both Wachusett and strands. I use Strands early season and Wachusett during the season. oth do a really good tune. I get a full tune once early season and once mid season. I hot wax and debur with a diamond stone weekly at home. I ski 130 or so days a season and maintain 4 pairs of skis and my GF's snowboard. I couldnt afford to have a shop do all my tuning. Don't bother with a race tune. The boys at strands or wachusett will have your edge surgical sharp. They put an all temperature wax on after tuning but in my opinion it is a compromise (like all season tires, I call them no seasons because they are great in NO seasons). I buy bulk blocks of different temperature bulk waxes at strands. If you buy the red, blue and green (low, medium and warm) waxes you should be good for about all new england throws at you. Good luck. If you need any help the guys at Strands are more than helpful. Tim

The ski reps send and some of the mfgs send their gear down to SkiMD for tuning and while I was last there I saw skis from some of the best junior and masters racers waiting to be done. Do yourself a favor and give this place serious consideration before you go anywhere else. Read the FAQ on the website and I think it'll open your eyes a bit. I took 4 pairs of skis in there recently and found that the shop that everyone recommended in the valley where I ski had put upwards of a 5 degree bevel on the base edge. Oops. Remember, not all tuning machines are equal and they are only as good as the guy running them.

For daily maintenance, consider the WaxWHIZard from Ray's Way. See http://www.alpineskituning.com/raysway.waxwhiz.htm. I use this with the Dominator all temperature wax - even on race days.

Anyone want to weigh in on Mt. Snow?

World Class (the Atomic Store across from 7-11) - GREAT hand done race tunes!!!!

Equipe and Alpine Trader - good stone grinds and equals in my book (I take my gear to Equipe when I need a grind a couple of time a year)

Mount Snow Sports - hit or miss in my experiences. I've had some good work and then I've had some not so good work

I haven't tried either Great Northern or Sports Odyssey for tunes. I know that some of the instructors like Great Northern.

Thanks Doc!

Any experience with any of them being open late-ish? 10 pm or later? Looking for Fri. night drop off.

My friend on Mount Snow ski patrol says they all use Joe Jones the Great Outdoors. My skis are there right now so I'll see how they do in the next few weeks.
