In the flatlands of Ct. for a little bit longer.
So i find it sad that a snowboarder died at killington. From what i heard he took a hit to the chest. I was wondering if anyone skis with their Mountain bike armor on during the winter for protection? Could a chest plate have saved him?
I skied with a guy once who only will go into the woods with a full face helmet because he almost got his jaw ripped off his face once. I wonder if he wore full armor as well.

I saw that on the news this morning; he's from the town I work in. That's really sad...so close to Christmas. I guess he sent his folks a cell phone pic 20 minutes before it happened. The news made it sound like he hit a lift tower?

I really don't know the extent of what happened. But as far as a chest protector goes...I'm not sure if that would have helped. I used to wear one ATVing. It mostly helped with the stones (roost) that would get kicked up from the machine in front of you. I'm sure it could help protect ribs; but I'm not sure it would do much good in the case of some serious force.

a good reminder

this is indeed sad :(

to answer the question I do wear some body armor when boarding: RED impact vest, wrist guards and a helmet.

I do have my eye on some armor from POC that is dual-purpose snow/bike protection including their impact vest, which has chest protection in addition to shoulder and spine. If I owned it you can bet I would be wearing it under my jacket....

Think about this a little. The blunt force trauma may be from the organs inside your chest like your heart hitting the inside of your chest wall. A very small bleed in the heart can eventually fill up the sac around your heart, which puts pressure on the heart. After 2 or 4 hours the patient's heart may stop from Cardiac Tamponade. Similar issues with pleural cavity called Tension Pneumotrorax The protective armor may reduce the risks of fractured ribs that may put holes into your lungs. Obviusly there are many other bad things that can happen even with protective armor.

Best to go at a more reasonable speed.

What a shame. Such a young man, leaving us too soon. My condolences to his family and friends.

Body Armor makes some great jackets, and I saw one in a local motorcycle shop for $100 and was tempted to buy it.

I'm an old school guy, started skiing in the 60's. Today I ski with a full face (BMX) helmet, and have not gone to body armor yet. Here's the fact, though - regardless of what protection you wear, high impact will hurt or kill you. Ski or ride in control.

When I look at snow sport deaths, the ratio is about 8 to 1, male to female. be careful out there please. Always err on the side of caution and safety.
