I love to x-c ski. After college when $$ were tight - wait, they're still tight - my downhill days went to near zero and I started x-c predominantly. Great work out. Last year, I got out more than 20 times. Over the last couple of years, I've picked up skate skiing and think it is fantastic - great exercise again and you can really cover a significant distance once you've figured out the technique.

Two places close to Boston are

Weston Ski Track - http://www.skiboston.com/skitrack/skitrack.php

Great Brook in Carlisle - http://www.greatbrookski.com/.

btw: both places have youth programs.

Also, check out Cambridge Sports Union youth program - http://www.csuski.org/ .

I like both Jackson and Brettonwoods. I want to get over to Wolfeboro this winter which I understand is very good.

There were some horse trails basically out my back door growing up that I did XC on quite often. If I'm going to drive a significant distance, though, I might as well do alpine. So since I started going to college I really haven't gone.

But twice in the last week or so. There are some nature trails about a half mile from my house, then while visiting family over Christmas I did a little bit after checking out my skins at a NELSAP area. The thing that kills me now is lateral stability. Any time I'm over uneven ground or old tracks my ankles tend to roll. Gotta figure that one out.

XC is terrific, especially when $ is tight. Glide/Wax issue with my scaled Snowbound Crowns have to figure out... Think I may spring for the real things/setup later on. Always see the AM xc tracks over at the small city's designated City Forest... Even have the signs "Stay off Ski Tracks" along trails.

Everyday - its how I walk the dog in the winter

we are lucky enough to have 16 acres to have trail owrk on and access too over 200 acres of woods to prowl around and check out animal tracks

for track xc we usually end up at craftsbury or over at hazen's notch ski centers

Mohonk and Minnawaska!

Beautiful scenary and close enough to NYC for day trip.

I used to go more often. But the last few years we got so much thawing the snow just don't stay very long. So if I can't go right after the storm for any reason, the snow's gone by the time I can go...

I got started on back country trails a few years back and LOVE it. So nowadays, that's my first choice. Places I like to (bc) ski? Lake Placid area and White Mountain area. Lots and lots of bc trails to hit. Probably going to WM for a bit of bc on MLK weekend if the New Year storm pans out.

Just went yesterday for the first time in more than 20 years. What a great workout! Plus an ideal way to avoid the crowds and lift lines during the holiday week.

Went at the Okemo Nordic Center in VT.

I am a big fan of XC. Never really adopted the skating technique, but really love the rythm of a good kick and glide. I find the experience very satisfying. What's really surprising that you can have a lot people using the trails, yet, most of the time it can be almost a solitary experience.
In addition to the track skis, I've been using my wider, touring skis with a solid 3 pin binding for maiking my own tracks in the woods. That's also a lot fun, but a lot of sweaty work.

Love XC. Backcountry near Lake Placid is my favorite but I've only done it a couple of times due to time/distance/etc. Trail to Marcy Dam is great.

Otherwise, almost right out my door in NJ is as good as anywhere if there's enough snow. We have a decent trail system nearby that's a bit boring for MTBing but really good for XC skiing.

It's been a few years, but we've gone several times. First time in the Catskills around North-South Lake. Lots of fun. Rental equipment sucked though! Rented from a country store. Went in to pick up food and saw the rentals and decided to try it! Then we hit the trails on the Mount Washington hotel property with equipment we bought. Much better. Awesome scenery and it was snowing. Did this after skiing/riding at Bretton Woods. I think it's called Bretton Woods Nordic Center. We also did High Point Cross country ski center in High Point state park in northwest NJ. Don't get a lot of snow there, but when they do it's a nice place. We left our equipment at our condo at Killington this season and plan on using it around Kent Pond a few days late in the day after snowboarding at K if the legs aren't too beat up. Saw a few people going around the entire frozen lake last season and thought that would be fun to try. Lot of trails in the area. I'd like to try skate skiing. Maybe rent from Mountain Meadows which maintains most of the trails in the area... http://www.xcskiing.net/

Go beyond Marcy Dam to Avalanche Lake. The best twist & turn single track skiing. The scenery will blow you away when you get to the lake.

Yes, the view is as good as any of the more exotic alpine locations IMO. I never skied to the lake, but I crossed it in the winter to climb the "trapped dyke". Imagine the skiing is great. Are there any trails beyond the lake or is it a there and back type of thing?

Most of my ski days are XC dog walks and poking around the abandon Norwich ski hill at the end of the street. Alpina Crossterrains with some light plastic boots. Nothing like skiing steeps in good snow on XC skiis. Or just meadow skipping down gluiding long turns when conditions are firm and fast....Not much into the true classic or nordic styles....just like to tromp around and check out the wildlife, and link some turns.

I've never gone beyond the lake myself.

The "Adirondack Ski Trails" says the trail on the other side of the lake are skiable. But unless you have a pre-arranged shuttle, you exit out the Newcomb side onto a lonely highway with no civilization nearby.

Some day in the distant future, I plan to try skiing from the south to Avalanche lake and back to see how it's like.

.... What is your favorite place to XC ?

Prospect Mtn to the north (near Bennington, VT) and Whitegrass to the south (near Davis, WV). Both are built around defunct downhill areas, so you have a lot of variety to the terrain. Its also hard to beat Mohonk / MInnewaska in between the two! Just got back from Whitegrass, & they had almost 20" at 3800'.
