Finaly decided to go somewhere else..from Utah that is. hooked up with the Diamond Dogs ski club out of NYC and headed to Montana for 6 days. Its a long trip, they routed us to Atlanta! We stayed at the Huntley Lodge on the mountain which turned out to be a pretty nice place. Its like a little village up there at 7500 feet, had to get used to that. Several restaurants and bars, several ski shops, groceries, pretty much anything you need. And the beer is good!

The mountain rises 4350 feet and is pretty well spread out, you won't get bored! Several high speed lifts, doubles, triples, and a tram which gets you to a pretty intimidating summit. The summit has some pretty steep runs off the face, the main chute requires you sign up with patrol and have avi geat. Sadly I didn't get to go down it as the weather socked it in..and I like to see things. We did go down the dictator chutes which while a little scary getting to where fine to carve down. Around the corner is liberty bowl, an easier but very long run. Going off that bowl into the mogul and tree fileds affords you a very long run, about 45 minutes to get back to the base. One thing this kind of vertical gets you..loooong runs. they have miles of mogul runs of all degrees. Glades everywhere, some steep, some not. Tight tree skiing is not my thing so this is where I found my limits.

Met up with lokyl who posts here and has lived there for over 20 years. To say the locals can ski well is a big understatement, they are way above any ability I will ever have. We toured through the tight trees which I found pretty difficult..but we got some untouched powder as a reward. Also learned some local lore which is always a plus. We survived a few hours with him and broke for lunch, sadly we didn't get to see him again as a storm hit and he had to work. The strom hit pretty hard and afforded us the powder skiing we where hoping for. Since its not a crowded place we managed to score some untouched lines off the triple chair, had to skirt some rock faces to get it but what the hell. It just got better and better as the storm dropped freshies every day. We left with almost a foot of freah on the ground but after 6 days non stop I was shot.

While it may be hard to get to this place is a must do. I like the fact that it is not over developed.A real last frontier, very down to earth. I will return.

Just head in there, bang a left, and keep your speed up!

I was out there the week before that (and am a lazy sh*t who can't figure out how to embed pictures into the trip reports) Loved the bowl beneath summit and the long long long mogul runs off the Challenger lift. Basically, woke each day to the avalanche control charges and then charged up the mountain.

Me and the kids loved the glades off the Thunderwolf Lift. Nice and bumpy and not too steep. Sounds like you were toured (tortured?) through the trees in the Dakota Territory. The gouges from the rocks to skiers right off of the Shedhorn lift kept me (and my feeble skiing level) out of there.

Immense terrain and variety. And no lines. I'll take that back. On the Sunday of President's Day weekend they had "their busiest day ever" according to one of the ambassadors. A total of 6000 visitors. But, the place is so big that once you navigated the main lift, it was still ski on to the lift.

We were able to find a place in the base lodge to sit and eat - for 11 - every day with little effort. I can't emphasis enough how big this place is and how under visited it is. A great place for all abilities and should be on your bucket list.

ha. i was there on the sunday of pres day weekend. i keep trying to tell these people, back home, depending on the mountain, you might not even attempt pres day weekend. i will say, there was a different type of person there that day, some rude in the lift lines, someone got short with me in the lift ticket line, which just doesnt happen here. all because i waited to go to the ticket window because a small child was trying to get back to his dad, and i let him cut in front of me. he wasnt occupying another ticket window. it kinda set the tone for the day and was more on guard. i know this story sounds petty, but it truly is different here. too many people from cali and washington state that weekend!

What size are those Salmons? They are real short for out west.

That wasn't me but I believe they where around 170..a little short for powder but much better than my 188's in the tight trees...the trees got so tight I couldn't fit between them..like driving a truck through a mouse maze..I'm better suited to big bowls...
the day we left was crazy according to the guy we skied with, but the sun came out Sunday and screwed the place up. went from 10 degrees Friday to 48 sunday.we lucked out with probably the most perfect week of the year...
The pic of James standing in front of lolkl cracks me up..James is not a small guy...lolkl wips through those trees..we kind of ..crashed through them..not pretty..
