I briefly considered going up to NH, but it's not worth the drive from NJ for just a few inches.

I am considering hitting up Elk or Shawnee for a halfday. They're supposed to get 1-3" on Sat. I might do an afternoon or night session, we'll see.

Any experience with holiday weekends at Shawnee? Was thinking it might be a change of pace and off the beaten path. I can't take another soul crushing day at blue or cb in lift lines.

I'll just ride a bunch of fixed grip lifts at Mount Snow and still more than likely get my desired 15-20 runs in by lunchtime and then retreat to the upstairs bar and just have a few extra folks to talk to ;)

Crowded holiday weekend skiing is FAR better than no skiing in my book! :) :daffy:
From an occasional day-tripper's perspective, I've become averse to crowds (although I enjoy going to Loon, go figure). On holiday weeks I prefer to go to places that normally aren't as busy. Don't like driving 3-4 hours in a day to wait in long lift lines and ski around a bunch of people.

I don't have kids so I avoid the holiday periods like the plague and refuse to go anywhere near the....wait hold on a sec my wife's telling me something.... Oh, looks like she committed us to taking all 3 of her brother's kids up skiing for the week. So YAY looks like I'll be there. How bad can it be....

Not true.Way less crowded than Mass vaca week.

I'm thinking that this year with the combo of school days missed post Sandy and now school days missed because of the Blizzard, next week atleast, when Mass, CT and NY traditionally have vacation week, won't be quite as busy as usual after Monday since so many school districts have cut back their traditional Pres week vacation length to make up missed school days this year.

I know that here in CT, there have been a number of school districts that won't have school this entire week because of the Blizzard and were announcing on the news today that they WILL have classes now next week starting on Tuesday

Skiing smaller areas these next two weekends: Dartmouth, Black, Abram, etc. May hit Cannon maybe or pop over the boarder if things look good at Sutton or Orford. If it dumps, I can always earn some powder turns. Staying far away from the major resorts.

Wish Dartmouth wasn't over 2 hours away, enjoyed it the one time I went. Must be nice when Holt's is completely open.

For various reasons I haven't been able to ski for 4 weeks and it's killing me. I'm going to Gunstock on Sunday and I don't care about the crowds. I gotta get out on the slopes.

I don't have the "week" off. I'm working just the same, like any other weeks. Not having kids, there's no reason whatsoever why I must take a REGULAR week for me off at the same week when it's most crowded and most expensive.

More over, I have a concert in the city Saturday night so no skiing Saturday which automatically avoided the worst day anyway!

Condition isn't exactly great right now, only OK. So I'm doing what I usually do for Sunday and Monday. Go where the crowd is relatively thin and price relatively low. That is, if I don't get side track with other obligations, which happens a lot when condition is less than great or crowd are thick or prices are high... ;-)

but it's funny how many expert skiers will only ski perfect conditions.
Then they're no longer "expert skiers"!

There's no two ways about it. You have to ski all kind of conditions to be called "expert". Stop skiing the worst conditions, you lose the comfort level to ski that stuff.

"Condition" doesn't include crowds and prices though. That's smart, nothing to do with skill level.

I won't be braving the crowds. There's stuff I neglect over the weeks because I spend nearly every day off skiiing somewhere. Good time to get my s**t together. I work 12 hour night shifts so I'm not productive on work days.

You never know...unless you go. I seem to recall a lot of people posting here about not skiing over the Xmas week because of concerns of holiday crowds. They missed some of the best conditons of the year in northern VT.

I'm taking this Saturday and Sunday (and maybe Monday) off and riding my bike instead but I've skied most of the past three weeks so I'm ready for the break anyhow. After that no more blackouts and it gets stormy again in these parts so i'll be going through the week anyhow.

I will be heading to Magic early Sunday morning and skiing through the following Sunday. With red and black running I expect very short lines on Sunday and then again the following Saturday. In between should be almost ski on. Then Im heading up to Smuggs for Monday and Tuesday and possibly Wednesday as well though 11 straight days is gonna hurt!

We'll be adding to the crowds at Sugarbush. I need to work on my patience anyways.

Yeah you never know but you've gotta make some educated guesses and work within the limitations you have. If I'm going to roll the dice on crowds I'm sure as hell not picking Xmas week.

Oh, I'm skiing all right! This weekend and the whole week as well. Mass school vacation so we're off to Sugarloaf. The mountain is so big that even the holiday crowds get dissipated and the lift lines are not too bad. We always mix a few XC days at the Outdoor center and that's a great way to enjoy the snow and escape the crowds. I am sooo looking forward to this! No big snowstorms on the horizon, but it looks like conditions are pretty good and will remain so for the next 10 days.
Anybody else heading out to Sugarloaf next week?

I don't think conditions will be that great at Hunter unless they blow some snow..and I haven't seen that happen this week yet..refrozen groomers are not my thing..might just slug out at home and plan a small trip to Utah for the end of the month...
