This is how my PT recommended I train starting now until Nov for ski prep... lower weights until failure. For context, I'm returning from a Feb 2023 tib/fib spiral fracture. Last winter was a throwaway for me because the 23 screws holding that together came out Oct '24. So my right leg was only 5% as strong as my left. Lots of leg workouts leading up to today, but now the focus is preparing for the "burn". I despise the gym but if it gets me back out there, so be it.

You must be chomping at the bit to get out there. Hope you have an injury free and as pain free of a ski season as possible.

I only got into lifting seriously two years ago. I desperately want to still ski at a high level in my senior years. Mortality and aging started whispering in my ears a couple of years ago and IMO, the best thing one can do to beat back father time is to maintain muscle mass through resistance training. Now I rarely go a day without it. It's just part of the daily routine. Up usually around 4:45, drink a quick coffee and at the gym from 5:30-6:30/7.

I rarely do weight training, maybe ten times all year :-(
But as a 70+ geezer I do low level cardio, such as bike, walk, golf in off season. When you ski 60-70 days per winter as I've done in recent years I consider that a cardio/strength combo. Used to jog. Was a serious runner as teen and early 20s.
Whatever works! Stay moving. Resist the sofa.

I’m a bit obsessed with mobility training these days. Just spending 5 minutes in a full squat first thing in the morning has loosened up hips and my ankles and calves feel very different while walking.

Got about 1300 miles on my Peloton since my ski season ended in April, plus about 30 rounds of golf walking and carrying my bag in that time frame too. Down just over 20lbs too (hoping for another 10 by when my ski season starts in around 3 months) doing my best to combat some of the challenges the mid 50's throws at oneself! 🤣🤣

oh, hello.

didn't feel like starting a new thread, but this seems as good a place to say hi.

summer was fine. whatever.

we're buying a small house in kingston new york. it will be our 50% of the time home. i am very excited to have a much closer launching pad for my drives.

i am going to be in montana the 2nd half of february, centered around whitefish and big sky, but with some additional indy destinations in the mix

hope everyone is doing great.

i've kept up running every day religiously but haven't lifted a weight in months.

Is the NE Ski Journal done for? It's currently gone from the Seamans Media homepage. The youtube page is still there but its been 4 months since anything has been updated. Do they usually pull the website in the off season?

That seems odd. I thought that they had some interesting stuff, but it seemed as if it was not getting much traction with the public.

Moving up to my neck of the woods. Still many "affordable" properties up here. After a decade of literally zero development there is housing springing up everywhere in Fishkill. Apartments and houses.

Was wondering when your upcoming season trip plans would appear. Now I know skiing is just around the corner.

we looked at houses in the closer nyc suburbs for much of the summer. mostly just to see what the market and towns were all about. and it was just so expensive and not at all the life i wanted. i am very glad price forced us to hudson valley. as a city person kingston is extremely appealing. we aren't closed yet and i don't want to talk much about it until it's really ours, but this situation would put us a short walk to uptown and midtown restaurants/bars/music/coffee. we wouldn't be giving up walkable urbanity. and the plan is to keep our jersey city rental unit at least for a while, so it wont be a full dive into upstate life. i am very excited.

I know you consider Catskills ski areas to be second tier, but in Kingston you will be about 30-45 minutes away from Belleayre and about an hour to Plattekill. Any chance we might see you skiing at either of those areas this season?

it's going to be an expensive year with buying and furnishing the house so i am not likely to ski off pass. i used to do windham when the stratton vs windham conditions didn't offer much of a difference in ski experience but they are off ikon. i have my indy so i am probably more likely to run groomers at catamount or berkshire east than in the past. id love to check out hickory if we get nice low elevation snow. maybe check out west, especially in the spring when we have later sunsets?

maybe 26-27 i will incorporate a NYski3 or platty pass. unlikely to pay day trip rates this season.

I have the basic Killington/Pico pass this season. The Ikon add-on with the beast365 pass was mostly a waste for me.

I also did the Belle only pass this season but will likely go back to the ski3 next season.
