Agreed. Made it on the mountain before 8 and went to 2:30. The massive crowds never materialized. Skyship seemed to be having some difficulties around lunchtime. I considered taking a shuttle back to K1 before getting on and getting to the midstation where it stopped again. I took that as a sign and got out and continued onto Needles Eye.

What’s up with the Summit Express at Pico? Been closed all week for maintenance. Sounds bad, timing is dreadful.
Not always easy to source parts for a roughly 40 year old Yan/Poma refit "franken lift" if one is needed.

That's why in the East, there are sometimes extended maintenance delays with the Snowshed 4 and Mount Snow's Grand Summit Express, as they're all of similar vintage and hybrid components

True, but one might have hoped in K's case that they would have saved the most problematic sourcing parts from when they took down Superstar. They only have 3 other lifts like it still.

Yes, but would you take a part off a 350,000 mile Toyota Camry before scrapping it to help keep your 310,000 mile same year Camry keep going? I suspect there were very few wear items on that lift that were remotely worth keeping, never mind finding the space to store it.

Imagine running a real ski resort with that mindset and risk.

You would if they were the only parts available. I'm pretty sure when they removed superstar they said they were saving parts for snowshed and pico, but like you said I'm sure there were lots of parts that weren't worth saving

I'm sure in an "ideal" mtn ops world, every lift would get replaced in the say 15-20yr lifespan timeframe. Granted the cost of passes, day lift tickets, and any other revenue stream a resort has, would be much higher than it is now.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, especially when it comes to a fleet of complex machines often with 5-6 figure price tags

You can still get new parts for a Camry, not for these lifts. You would be a fool to not keep the old parts.

I don't know if today is the first day they posted these details, but I like the transparency and detailed information...

We want to keep you informed on two recent lift issues. The Summit Express Quad has been down since Tuesday, February 17, due to a failed keystone sheave, a critical component that guides and supports the haul rope. Our lift maintenance team quickly diagnosed the issue and are working with an outside entity to fabricate the rare part fabricated from scratch. We are optimistic that the Summit Express Quad will be ready to operate Saturday and should be in good shape heading into the weekend.

The Outpost Double experienced a more significant mechanical failure on Wednesday, February 18, involving the lift’s drive shaft. Outpost is a 1969 Carlevaro-Savio fixed grip double chairlift. It is considered an β€œorphan lift,” meaning the original manufacturer is no longer in operation. Because of this, replacement parts are extremely limited and must be specially sourced or custom fabricated. Due to the age of the lift and the complexity of sourcing components, the Outpost Double will be down for an extended period. There is currently no estimated timeline for its return to service.
