Never made sense

No untried horse is worth that much. He was bought as a yearling from his breeder for $425,000 and put into the Keeneland yearling sale where a bidding war broke out between a sheik and a British betting-company owner. They'd battled before.
As you can see, he is a beautiful, well-conformed horse. Supposedly, he was very fast in private training sessions but got hurt preparing to run a 2-year-old. (And, if you believe that ...) After that, it was a series of unimpressive comebacks and he was retired after three starts.
Interestingly, the guys who made the approximately $15,575,000 pinhooking profit, bought him back from the betting tycoons and he is standing stud in Florida for $5,000.
That means he only has to service 3,200 mare at $5,000 apiece to make $16M.
