Mods, please change title to 'drop'

I stand by the intent, why are we the only large economy in the world desperately hanging on to antiquated units?

Everyone with kids needs to stop using words like pounds, miles and inches in their house. Start using words like kilograms, kilometers and newtons.

Basically because when the entire globe adopted the Metric system in the 1970's Americans were too stupid.
Going metric was one of the major factors that taught the US how far behind we were in Math especially, but also everything else.

I lived in 2 other countries as a kid and went to a public school.
Age 8 Geography, we leaned all 200 countries and their capitals.
Age 9 had to take Latin in addition to another language, which was usually French or Russian.
Age 11 Algebra. Geometry at 12 and Calculus at 13.

US public education was 3-4 years behind what was being taught abroad, and still hasn't caught up. Look at all the top notch Engineering, and Applied Science Programs in the US, the vast majority of their PhD fellows are from Asia, and Europe.
