The marginal cold next week is now a nice, long duration blast. Could have the dozen usual early season players all open by Saturday.
I am cautiously optimistic about the cold weather arriving. I am also a long term New Enlgand ski enthusiast and part time wether geek and know all too well how a good looking shot of cold air 5 days or so out, especially this time of year, can end up being vastly different, and often not in a good way for skiing, by the time it finally arrives.....

The ground is also very warm, it will take a while to cool it off to get the snow to pile up. No way do I see a dozen resorts open by next Saturday.

Agree it’s trended colder and a dozen May turn on the guns. But I expect only a few have the window and power to open, with North Ridge looking almost probable at this point. But it’s a ways off, and ironically a mid week snow event would hurt the effort, but be psychologically beneficial.

Looks like snow guns will be on over the weekend in N, New England.

OP, this is why Canada is our closest, bestest buddy.

Didnt want to create a thread for it, but since it's a "season has begun" thing, I saw the Warren Miller movie tonight. It wasn't terrible. Given it was a clip show my expectations were extremely low so it wasnt hard to hurdle. The only 2 new bits of original content filmed were actually the worst parts of the film IMO. One was a dopey bit where Johnny Mosely skis with a fictional New Englander character who skis backseat in a buffalo plaid shirt and jeans. The other was a "the future of skiing" segment filmed at Woodward Park City. That's actually a great concept, but IMHO it felt like they just phoned it in so they could say there was some new content in the film. Disappointing given it was a great idea as my wife said.

My favorite segment of the night ironically wasn't actually part of the Warren Miller film, but something new Outdoor did this year where they played 3 amateur finalist short films (probably 5 minutes each) and you vote on your favorite so the winning amateur filmmaker gets a $10,000 prize. I though all 3 short flics finalists were great: 1) Typical extreme skiing action, but done about as good as it gets
2) Flooding outdoor hockey rinks at night so kids can play that day
3) The process & work recovering from a torn ACL so you can ski again.

No idea how Donny hasn't blown an ACL doing his bit. Backwards twisting falls are the most typical cause. He's already half way there with his backseat flying down the mountain. Twist the wrong way and pop!

Did you get anything for going? Or just a chance to get something?

You've gotta be amazingly good to ski that badl...wildly. And he is. Most of us mere non-Olympian mortals would be in a knee brace after a half dozen bumps like that. Especially if we weren't fortified by a cold Moxie.

No doubt he probably absolutely rips skiing normally and that allows him to pull off the bit. But it wouldn't take much skiing in such a way to pop it I wouldn't think.

Oh yeah. I can't see back-seat-careening-down-White-Heat as a sustainable long term bit! The strength on display, if nothing else, is impressive though.

You’re unfamiliar with Donny Pelletier?

No, and I wish that was still the case. It was the same "joke" over-and-over-and-over. I can see it being funny for one 2 minute Youtube video or film segment, but that's about it. It was really overdone was my issue with it. Like, there's only 2 new things in this entire movie, and THIS is what you went with? lulz

They threw some free stuff to the crowd, but you'd need to be in the first 10 or 12 rows I guess. They did the typical pick-one-winner to go into the annual heli-skiing trip contest, as well as (ironically) one-winner to go into a Park City vacation, which drew some chuckles. Other than that it was like a boot bag, and some goggles.

So by far the lamest prizes & number of prize giveaways I've seen at a Warren Miller movie, and I bet I've been to at least a dozen or more WM movies. No free lift tickets. No free BOGOs. I did get a 2023 Sundance water bottle, which was at least useful for during the film. LOL Could giveaways be venue specific though? Maybe. There was also a photography contest winner there and a snowboarding athlete who's been in 11 Warren Miller movies (Rob Kingwill) signing.

It was my daughter's first ever movie, so at least whenever she's asked throughout life what was the first movie she went to see, instead of Bambi or Little Mermaid or something typical she'll say Warren Miller, which is pretty badazz IMHO.
