It makes sense because NH owns two areas (Cannon and Sunapee) and NY owns several.

Technically, Vermont owns a lot of land that lies under ski areas. Thanks to State Forester Perry Merrill, who felt that skiing was a great economic engine for the state, he spearheaded a lot of ski area development on state land by private lessors. Jay, Burke, Stowe, Killington, Okemo (IIRC), Ascutney, and probably a few others that I have missed all sit on state park land and lease the land from the state.

It sucks they went Ikon and didn't go Indy. Having Jiminy the same pass as Catamount & Bosquet and Bromley on the pass with Magic would have been amazing. Plus another NH mountain in the mix. On Ikon it really doesn't add as much.

Feel the same but their being a micro-conglomerate of sorts doesn’t fit the Indy mold. I would love a couple Cranmore days and I’ve never been to Bromley.

Edit: Although I guess the Jay/Ragged situation is similar. Dang.

It's very interesting. And it appears that Alterra is now opening up a new tier of resorts. I imagine that they are going to pay Fairbanks a lower amount for the benefit.

Windham's Friends Rate pass sale is this weekend (March 7-9)

$2000 for the Double Diamond pass (7 days)
$1,100 for Sunday to Friday
$550 for Monday to Friday

Discounted passes for local business owners, hometown heroes and neighboring counties students. Free passes for the Windham's public school students.

Yeah, I think the last I heard was that Windham was going the "premium" route. I imagine that this is part of that effort. I can only imagine what day tickets will be.......

Years ago when you could get reasonable day ticket deals I skied there maybe a couple times a season. With Ikon I visited once when my ex wanted to go on a quick day trip (we both had Ikon so it was a no-brainer in that case). Unless something changes, that will likely have been my last visit there.

It's about the proximity to NYC and people with lots of disposable income and limited free time and little desire to travel further for something better. I think it's more the "Club" aspect they're turning it into than the quality of the skiing product. The ownership likely sees all these golf clubs near the city charging $15k a year for a single membership (plus six figure initiations) and think there's a market of people who will drop $2k without thinking about it. The same folks who buy two $500 bottles of wine during their weekly night out for dinner.

These people are not like us

I wonder if the strategy is to intentionally sell so few season passes that you turn around and claim going private is the only path to the ski area's survival.

And apparently from what I have heard, the Hermitage club, with it's now 100k initiation fee and around 20k/year annual dues is on quite sound finacial ground now.

There is a market, albeit a relatively small, niche market, for high dollar, high ammenity, pay to play type skiing for those who can afford it. And from what I have heard about the current members of the Hermitage, lots of families with younger, school aged kids, and the social aspect that they offer is very appealing to the membership as well. If they can afford it, and enjoy the experience, and are out there having fun sliding down the hill, good for them, since we all want to enjoy our time on the hill

We say that all the time about all the fat cats we fly around. Take what they spend and move the decimal two or three places left. That's what it feels like to them to drop the kind of $$ they do on things.
