Got up to Alta a bit late (Had to snowblow our sidewalks, driveway, and garage apron before setting off for the trip up LCC.) and struck up a conversation in the packed Wildcat parking lot with a nice young man (to me 35 is young) from Turkey who had never skied Alta before. He was asking questions about the mountain and I simply invited him to tag along with me. We did a couple of warm-up runs off Collins down to the Angle station and I took him through the trees where we found lots of nice soft untracked areas. We then worked our way over to Supreme, and did several runs down through the various chutes off Challenger. I confess that I was too lazy to hike up Catherine's and since it was "day 1" for my guest, he demurred also. Never having been to Alta, my new found friend couldn't stop grinning at the fun he was having. Despite having started late, we kept finding lines that had not been skied and were often into snow that was at least shin deep. After a break at Alf's, we did a couple of hot warm-up laps off Sugarloaf, and then took the traverse back to Wildcat. We finished up the day with a couple of trips out to the "Ho" where there was still plenty of soft snow even though it had been thoroughly thrashed by late afternoon. Our last "run" was to GMD for a Cutthroat to finish the day. It was not only a good ski day, but a great day of conversation about the social, political, and economic realities of a region of the world that I have not had the opportunity to visit yet.
