Any difference (aside from price)? Any strong reason to choose one over the other?

Yes, I'm still looking at laptop replacements. I've gotten over the name-brand issue, since I've realized folks like Acer and Systemax actually build the namebrand ones. But I can't find anything that tells me what the difference between Intel and AMD chips is, without a whole load of technobabble that I don't understand, and functions I'll never use.

Don't pay much attention to hyperthreading, it won't do a whole lot for you.

From my experience, Pentiums will generate a bit less heat but that shouldn't be a big deal with an approriate heat sync and an unblocked case fan/vent.

The only thing I had against AMD was the rumor that the tested their processors at very low temperatures and were able to achieve and then advertise higher clockspeeds than what the consumer would actually run them.

But I don't think it's a big deal, even if it was true. I'd say go for the best price.

Best price. Unless you are planning to get in there and overclock and tweak the shiznit out of it, you aren't going to see a major difference between the two; especially given the types of applications you've desribed running.

Sweet.

One has to wonder, then why Dell sells so many computers. Easy, and good service, I suppose.

Yeah - Dell sucks ass. Shitty computers sold to people who don't put the time into researching what they're buying.
