its scary how quickly workers rights are being stripped away in this country. Corporations (or the state in this matter) are trying to get rid of all the skilled workers so they can pay people that dont have the skills very low wages to do important jobs, and we wonder why america is where it now is.

How would you feel if someone came into your house that you've been feeding for a while, and one day said something akin to "that porterhouse steak you've been feeding me all along is no longer good enough, I won't eat unless you feed me filet" and all the while there's a bunch of folks only eating say Steak-Umms??

The employee no if's and's or but's about it has certain rights and deserves to be treated fairly for the work they do. However there are times when a worker's perceived rights, and economic reality are exclusive of one another. If for whatever reason, Belleayre used to have an operating budget of $X and that budget (for various reasons) is now say only 75% of $X that's a reality that has to be faced and dealt with. With Belleayre being a state run area, the funding for Belleayre is in direct competition with dollars from the New York State general fund with say the budgets of the Department of Social Services, Medicaid dollars, dollars for education, etc.

Just look at what Powdr did with the employees at Killington when they took over several years ago. No different than what's happened at Belleayre with their employees last year.

Get real - these emoloyees have had it made for years and years and they knew it. If they weren't happy with their jobs they should look for something else just like everyone else would do.

They stayed because they had great benefits and pay that could not be matched anywhere else. These jobs are seasonal and do not include medical, much less fully paid medical, at either Windham or Hunter. Not to mention they pay about 1/4 what these guys get at Belleayre an hour, no vacation benefit and not year round pay.

I don't know who convinced these guys to call in sick on the busiest day of the year, but I can't imagine any of them feel good about it. They must be getting grief from everyone they know about what a horrible thing they did. What a bunch of ungrateful @#**&^#&^#& they are.

exactly - tells you what kind of person these guys are. Not someone you'd want to live with or as a friend.

All they did was send their customers to other mountains. Hunter was mobbed on Sunday & Monday. Spoke to many folks on the lift who said they would never go back to Belleayre as you never know when it would happen again. That means Belleayre will lose even more money and have to make more cuts.

I still can't believe these guys were so stupid not to think their actions through.

While I know the other areas are appreciating the extra business, I am not happy about the longer lines and crowded slopes because of it.

Guys, we're talking about lift mechanics, not lift attendants.

A little research says these jobs are Year round jobs, not seasonal, and average pay is 37K with benefits.

So if the lift mechanics at Belleyare only make 30K, they are under paid.

Sounds to me that if the Belleayre lift mechanics are so pissed with their current condition, they should go to Camelback instead of not showing up for work during one of the busiest days of the season.

A quick search of the New York state civil service title and salary plan website will tell you that a fill time mechanic makes approximately $55,000 a year. These employees are paid well above the national average for a lift mechanic. Also keep in mind that they are eligible for a new york state pension. You will not get that type of retirement benefits at any privately owned ski area.

1) How do you know the lift mechanics at Belleayre are paid $30,000?

2) Do you think someone doing the same job in Manhattan will make the same pay as someone doing that same job in Des Moines, Iowa?

3) You're not including their pension, which is a considerable part of their compensation.

I'll be awaiting the update to this story, which will likely involve a Union supporting these idiots, and the state looking the other way and not reprimanding them.

1) Here's a tip for you; if you're going to participate in a thread, be sure to read all comments from the beginning. Someone earlier on in this thread stated that Belleyare Lift Mechanics made 30K, I was addressing that comment, I have no idea if the 30K is correct or not.

2) That is irrelevant to anything I posted, but for the record; anyone but an idiot would think the same pay for the same job regardless of location is justified.

3) Not sure if the 30k someone else posted and that I was responding to is even a real number, let alone includes a pension. However, if you read the job posting I posted, it included benefits and a 401K, take that for what its worth.

Then why parrot it in the first place?

Uhhhhh......really? This is a shocking statement, so I'm guessing either you're 16 years old, or you have absolutely no semblance of economics and finance.

I know you're "not sure", that's exactly why I said that. The pension is one of the largest state carrying expenses of these employees. lol

OMG are you for real? Read much?

Look, go back an reread the thread. Someone posted that a news paper article stated the lift Mechanics made 30K, someone else posted that 30K was more than Hunter pays for a season job, I did a little research and was trying to bring some fact to the discussion. You grab my post ( out of context ) and come charging in here shitting all over the thread.

"
WTF? You think the pay rate in Des Moines is the same as Manhattan?
