I've been a customer of Comcast in MA for too long and am getting tired of the constant price increases. I tried calling about special packages and really they have nothing except suggesting I reduce services. I currently have cable TV (+HBO), internet, dig phone for $172/month. I checked what competitors I have available...No Verizon FIOS, but RCN is an option. Looks like I can get the above 3 services (Showtime instead of HBO) + a DVR for $85/month for 12 months. Based on price it seems worth the effort to change. I checked the channel lineup and it has all I need/want.

I don't know anyone using RCN...do any of you have RCN? What is your experience with them? How are the services and how are they with billing and customer service issues?

I had RCN when living in a large apt building in Boston. They were excellent. Just had cable and phone at the time. I'd go back to them in a second if they were available.

RCN has some great engineering practices in their headends, they tend to be a little cheap when it comes to outside plant. Comcast invests in newer technology. Do you really think that RCN won't also have annual rate increases?

I fully expect them to have rate increases, but it should take a few years to bring me to frustration again. In the first year it looks like I'll save $1200...that's a lot of ski days. This is also motivating me to dis-entangle myself from my comcast email. Once I've done that I can pursue whichever cable company has the deal of the year.

What technology do you think I won't see from RCN? I expect the on-demand may be less robust, but I'm willing to try it for a year I think.

On-demand content will look a little lack-luster. Internet speeds overall are probably a little slower. Less HD channel growth.
