So I've noticed over the past several years that I seem to see the leaves turning color earlier and earlier. Seems like it was 20-something August not so long ago.

Today...on my own street as the sun was setting, I noticed a few trees starting to lose their green. One in particular is this huge maple that ends up with spectacular color in September. For now, it's still mostly green with some large areas lightening up.

I'm looking forward to ski season...but not at the expense of a shorter summer. 5 August is just a bit early for leaf color.

Never too early!

I also have not used the A/C much lately (gets turned on in the evening when the oven's on for dinner instead of all day). The burning bush in our yard started changing last week. Beautiful reds on it already.

I feel like the leaves often start turning just a bit in August...not just this year or last year but every year...It has nothing to do with cooler weather...It's due to a lack of chlorophyll which is what gives leaves its green pigment..In August alot less chlorophyll is produced then in May/June in temperate climates...wow I remember something from my Freshman weather and climate class.

My AC is still buzzin...it's still in the mid-upper 80s here and this morning on the way to work it was already 73 degrees and muggy..

Maples in swampy areas will turn in August usually. It's just a tease though-still have summer part two ahead.

From a weather stand point Fall is by far my favorite. I can't wait for cool temps and low humidity.

I like fall a lot too-especially September. I chose to come home on vacation in September this year instead of seeing family over holidays because the weather can be so nice and the ocean is still kinda warm. Also nice when kids go back to school and tourist season ends.

Two things.

1) True, it's a lower level of chlorophyl....but it's also photo-period. Less sun, less chlorophyl. The temperature difference (day/night) is what brings out the brilliant colors, which is why the color is Washington DC is...meh....and the color in the NE is WOW!

2) That tree I mentioned a week ago is MOCKING me! THe progression of color change is amazing, yet depresiing since it's still frickin Mid-August. I'll see if I can grab a pic sometime this week.
