Anyone have any suggestions about backcountry skiing in the Northeast?

Preferably within 3 hours of NYC.

PM me with info if you don't want it to be public.

Preferably within 3 hours of NYC.

You are eliminating some of the best stuff. Snow in parts of the Adirondacks is incredible right now.

Never skied the Adirondacks, but have hiked and saw some very interesting ""hike for turns" ski trails. Believe I saw the most on our hike up Algonquin.

Seconded on the Thuderbolt in N. Adams Mass. Prolly more like 4-5 hours, but it's a cool tour with a shelter up top. Skin bellow's pipe trail and ski thunderbolt. A lot of history and a well mantained BC trail. Great beginner BC. The connecticut nelsap stuff would be fun, and with a descent dump, I bet alot of the hiking trails in and around the Delaware Watergap would go. Sunset lake trail?

I will deffinately hit up Thunderbolt. I have a place at Mt. Snow so while there I can drive to N. Adams in under an hour.

Other suggestions?

Check out the Danby area. VT Taconics have some big vert with sustained pitch. Different character then the greens....they are on my list. Let me know what you find.

Haven't been in years (hopefully rectifying that situation shortly) but Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks is a pretty sweet BC experience - 4 or so hours to get to the top. 45 minutes to come down if you take your time.

Maybe one day, but the 4 hour drive plus the 4 hour hike puts that out of my league for a day trip.

there is no backcountry in the east

you have to go to utah for that

Last weekend I hiked an mountain and skid powder that rivaled some of my best days ever skiing out west.

Thus, there is indeed backcountry skiing in the est.

Now let's not get carried away.

Dude, out west.....

Have you ever skied a cut trail, 100 feet wide, moderately steep, with about a foot of powder, and NOT A SINGLE TRACK ON IT, out west?

I have skied powder, some great powder, out west.

But this was pretty unique.

You are right, I guess I am exaggerating.

BUT, the weekend in VT I spent a total of around $50, for food and beer.

TO fly out to Utah, Colorado, or Wyoming and stay out there could cost thousands.

So for the easiness and cost, it was amazing....

Fix it for ya! :)

I'd much rather ski in the trees/glades, moderately steep, with about 3 feet of powder, and NOT A SINGLE TRACK ON IT, in VT...

No doubt...Danby (Dorset) Mountain is huge and steep. Been asking around about that one. My bro lives in E. Dorset and he's been useless up to this point.
