backcountry survival kit

this season along with last, i have been in the woods a lot mostly snow shoeing but some telemarking. i made a kit small enough to fit into a small bag, that i put into my bigger backpack. looking for ideas and suggestion on what i should add, or take out
here is a list of what i have so far:
whisle
compas
water?wind proff matches.
folding pocket stove ( about the size of a pack of dentyne ice gum pack)
4 heating packs ( military aproved- for what its worth) for the stove
hatchet combo hammer, pry bar
flint/mag bar for starting fires.
l.e.d. head lamp,( three L.E.D/ reg. light) with extra batteres
four ration food bars
small knife, 3 inch blade fold out.
my first aid kit which includes
bandaids
sam splint
advil
hemostats ( sp)
twesser (sp)
other med. items

im sure that there are others out there who have kits.
any advise i would love postive or negative

Sounds pretty good. I would definitely add a Space Blanket. Also, the whistle should be plastic, and should be kept around your neck or clipped to your clothing in easy reach. If something tragic happens, you don't want to have to find and dig into your pack to get it.

I also carry a little plastic signal mirror, a length of bright orange light tie cord, eyeglass repair kit (if applicable to you), a couple of different replacement buckles for the critical straps on my pack, Platypus patch kit (only in summer), hand and toe warmers, and a few tie straps.

I got a little Dakine Backcountry Kit for 50 bucks with a bunch of the things you mentioned. firestarter, space blanket, compass, waterproof matches, etc. tons of stuff.

something that takes up little space and seems to be amazingly useful are a few 6 or 8 inch tie wraps, they can hold all sorts of things in place.

Bring an "FRS" (Family) radio in addition to cell phone- ski patrol monitors channel 9(subchannel 11) :wink:
