Day one you'll spend on your butt.
Day two you'll spend on your face.
Days three and four will be evenly split between the two.
Day five you'll make turns.
Day six you'll have a good time.

At least, that's my brother-in-law's review of boarding. I trust him, and he's an excellent boarder and an even better skier.

Pretty much how it goes - give or take a day or two... Some people pick it right up the first day..

My advice to anyone starting is this..
"Ride it out".. You may think your going to fall but chances are your not..
Also..
When your first learning your upper body tends to control your lower.. So if you look somewhere.. Your going there... Look to the middle of the trail..

Day 1: All Day Snow board ski Camp?

Mu sister in law took it up because her boyfreind at the time took her down "limits" as the last run of the day where she blew out her knee...

She still married him...and she loves being a board bunny

Snowboarding is so much easier then skiing... Thats why I love it.. Seems like theres a million different ways to ski... But not so many snowboarding..

But as said it's way tougher the first few days...

Verdicts still out on telemarking... ;)

ctenidae has it about right. You can ease the pain if you go to the local sledding hill or golf course in between or even before you go to a mountain. To this day I am still cutting my own little paths in some hills near my house. Believe it or not I found getting off the lift the most annoying part. I didn't and still don't, wear a helmet but if I could do it all over again I would have worn one at first. The back of your skull and shoulders will most likely take it the worst. Don't give up, it's a small price to pay for freedom! Good Luck

When I tried snowboarding in 2003, I spent most of my time either on my chest or on my butt. Not fun. Gave it a couple hours, but man those falls hurt (the bigger they are, they harder they fall  ). I never got used to the "riding the fall-line on my side" feeling as opposed to facing downhill. I also was over-carving.

My advice: lesson. Patience, bottle of Advil, and a massage afterwards.

Hey.. Hope you had fun! Started my first day with a lesson then worked out on my own. I do think the lesson is a good way to start. At the end of the first day I was able to link three turns together - not pretty ones mind you but linked none the less. That was 9 seasons ago and I haven't been on skies for the past 8. They are right though you have to go at least twice and don't be afraid to be a beginner again, most of the people I talk to that tried boarding once and quit have lots of reasons why they don't try again but I think most just don't want to start over. If you like to learn new things you will more than likely do fine and I do find it easier on my knees. Think sideways! Good luck.

ok here ya go ...i took a 2 hour lesson "with wife" after an hour i prayed for anything that would make the pain go away"ass is so soar forearm also" could not get over the fact that if i leaned back i was screwed and would have to fall to stop.."all i could say to my self was please god make it stop".i really hoped it would be over...we tried after we ate but were wiped out..so right now getting ready yo go skiing ...figure the pain in shin is one of many pains today and seems minor compared to most of my new ones...so never again will i venture to the darkside

Meanwhile - I hit a tree yesterday in the back country...
The brunt of the collision was with my left big toe... :) Seriously..
Have a big black bruise on the end of it...
If I had been in ski boots - it wouldnt be bruised..

OK Skidbump..you have hit the nail (and apparently many other areas as well) right on the head! I have been tempted for years to try "riding" but felt the "learning curve" was excessively steep for a person of my age (two months shy of 59). I just can not see myself beating myself up for a couple of days. I heal a lot slower than the youngsters who seem to take serious butt and face plants and then jump up and keep going. I think I will just enjoy the show and stay with my sticks!
