Arrived mid-morning as I took it easy heading up. Route 28 has been repaved almost the entire length from the Thruway to the mountain; very nice, when did that happen? Three buses were parked in the lot--early season ski club trips already I suppose. It was overcast all day with temps in the mid 20s and constant flurries. On the upper mountain only Onteora was open, with snowmaking ongoing on the upper double-black section, which was bumped up nicely with good artificial snow cover. No problem sinking the edges in there. From mid down it was somewhat crowded at times but except for a few close calls everyone was well-behaved from what I observed. Conditions were scratchy down the middle but plenty of soft fresh snow on the each side. I got about 10 runs in, which was fine for my first day out. Snowmaking was proceeding on Wanatuska, the next trail over, and on Iroquois, a trail on the lower mountain. There’s a chance they may open by tomorrow. On the way home I noticed that the fruit stand in Mt Tremper hasn’t yet closed for the season so I sprung for a basket of locally picked apples, a sweet treat for the ride home.
