Have you ever invoked the powder day rule - 'No friends on a powder day' ?

I have.

We - myself and my primary ski bud Bill - were at Sugerbush for the weekend. Two storms that week had dumped 48" of cold Vermont powder. We made a couple of deep runs thru some trees and Paradise before Castlerock opened and then one run on Castlerock. Then Bill says "I told Paul and Kevin that I would meet them at 10 o'clock at Heavens Gate (?) chair. With Castlerock running at half speed and every other chair gone we'll never meet them". I told him flat out "Go ahead, but I'm not wasting my day meeting up with them. I'm skiing here. Youi can go if you want." Well, his leaving was the best thing that could have happened. I skied down to the now gargantuan line calling out "single". To my amazement there were singles in that line. So I hopped in. Now every time down I called out "single" as I approched and cut in well ahead of the pack. One time I jumped in and another skier just one set back says "Hey, I'm a single too. You can't cut in." I responded with "Tough. If you went all the way thru this line without hooking up, that's your tough luck. What were you going to do, ride the chair single?" I got many more deep powder runs down Castlerock that morning then anyone else I'm sure. As an added benifit I met several good skiing partners for half a run before I blew them off too.

Most of the powder days I ski are alone. On the Friday of the St. Patricks storm last year when it was dumping all afternoon and into the evening at Blue mountain. I skied in a pack of about 5 skiers and I was constantly racing them to the best powder on each run. We even did a group poach of the halfpipe and got freshies in there. Your singles line strategy is exactly what I do. Espeically for a long line like the Castlerock chair..You have to be savvy in this world. Sometimes as a way to cut the line on busy weekends..we join the race team and ride with them. It's funny when they're near the front of the line and we ski along the side of the rope and say..."There's our team"..essentially cutting the entire line. I'm like a 10th year J1..lol
