Blue 1/26/2010

Date(s) Skied: 1/26/2010

Resort or Ski Area: Blue Mountain

Conditions: Variable

Trip Report: So yesterday I figured since I had the day off anyway, I'd head out to Blue to for a few runs and see how much damage the rain did. It was ok overall. It could have been a lot worse. It looked like at some point last night they did get a dusting of snow or sleet. I was in no rush in the AM and didn't get on the mountain until 9:20. Did Lazy/Falls for a warm up. Very solid cord, especially on the Falls runout. Moved over to Paradise. Same frozen cord. The sun was just starting to shine down on the trails, and I decided to give Main Street a try. The top was pretty good, lower not so much. The bumps look like golf balls due to the rain. I would have skied Main Street more, but since the Lower Park was closed, I didn't feel like taking Shuttle all the way to Home Stretch.

Around 10:30 or so I decided to give Razor's a try. Much better then I expected. Challenge was even a little better then Razors, although from the lift it looked worse. Dreamweaver didn't hold up very well and Switchback was a mess. The left side of Falls wasn't groomed at all. Around 12 they tried to groom it and just made it worse. By 1pm Lazy & Paradise were really nice and soft. I must have lapped Lazy 5-6 times in a row. It never got crazy at all yesterday, and I felt like I was skiing great.

Sidewinder Park and Lower Park were closed for grooming. Around 2pm they opened the lower park, so I gave Main Street another spin. It was only ok. Lower Park was incredibly soft...softest trail I skied all day.

The day started out very sunny, but by noon clouds moved in and there was a brief snow flurry. The clouds eventually moved out and by 2:30 it was sunny again.

In the end, I skied for around 5 and a half hours and did a total of 32 runs (34,750 vertical). Close to record breaking day at Blue, and a really fun day. No crowds at all, and could ski right on to the next chair. A great day to just arc 'em and park 'em.:-D

Nice TR as usual. 32 runs :-o Awesome.

Conditions were surprisingly ok to good last night. Racers had a very edgble surface. Mike didn't want to stop he was having so much fun. He missed first beer after the clinic

No Speed Patrol anywhere to be found yesterday. I completely took advantage of that

The speed gestapo has been better, but I've also made it a point to give them a wide berth as well.

Ill tell ya what...that place looks better than I would expected outside of NE. IFrom the pics, it looks kinda like its comparable to Wachussett? Would anyone here say thats a fair assessment, as far as vertical & whatnot?

nice report root! sound like a good long day. l had very low expectations heading up last night but the snow set up really well and was pure bliss to get the sl skis on edge in. like tarponhead sez i even skipped a beer for a a few more runs down the gates

i'm not sure if its due to the new winch cat or what but i gaotta say challenge has skiid very well this year. it was so buttery saturday morning i negelcted to do a speed check above the falls my first run and launched for what felt like a mile before feeling some real compression when i hit the flats. yeehaw
did you ever load any pics from saturday?

1082 feet vertical. The most in PA.

On the times I have seen them on the trail, I've just hoped off rails and made the biggest gaperest skidding turns past 'em. Typically, the redcoats are only looking up the hill, not down ;)

Damn Root! Way to go out and get it! 30+ runs! ShamWow!

Looks like things held up pretty well despite the rain. I would have thought things would have been much worse there.

Sweet groomer shoots too.

I didn't think I was going to stay that long when I first got there. The sun came out and almost everything got really nice and soft, plus it was empty. I just had to take advantage of that. I would have stayed longer, but I wanted to get to the gym for a soak in the hot tub before the "after work" crowd showed up.

Glad to hear Razor's is in good shape. My son has a GS Race there Sunday. Aside from Barneys are there any bumps? Still want to do a Blue, Elk, and Camelback weekend but gonna wait and hopefully have mother nature do her stuff.

they re-seeded the bumps on nightmare - they were in like a pre-pubescent/training bra stage saturday morning but the spacing was perfect! they should be real nice when they get skiid in and soften up a bit more. my son skiid em last night and said they were great, although he''s a decent bump skier he's only 11 so i'm not sure what that means...

Might get to take a lap or two on them Sunday but unfortunately race days are not really ski days, thus the plans for the weekend I described above. Hoping Mother nature helps us in Feb. Will do a detailed TR with many picture when I do.

The bumps on Asp at Camelback appear to be a causality of Mondays rain. I'm certainly not surprised and expect to see them rebuilt with the next good snowmaking window.

Root:

I'll be there (early as matter of fact - Upper Lodge). Would love to take a couple runs with you but like I said a race day is not much of a ski day so it wouldn't be alot. Would you have any interest in taking my Pocono tour (Blue, Elk, CBK) at a later date? If yes I'll fill you in on the details at a later date.

I'm a bottom lodge booter-upper. What time do you think you'll be there?
