Just wondering what is going on with this place, considering that the Ragged Management went under. Who is running it now?

I've been wondering the same myself. I'm trying to get a job there, so if I find anything out I'll let you know as soon as I do.

What would you do there??

Trying to do something sales/marketing related as that's my background. But I'll consider anything as long as the pay isn't terrible and I'm not bumping chairs or teaching kids.

Might end up at Cranmore coaching though, dunno, everything's still up in the air at this point. Just looking for something that's close to a career or is but allows me to play outside and work for a somewhat ethical company.

You know, I hope that the town/state will allow them to make some improvements there. It is a nice resource and it is a place that could do well, if they could get water, be allowed to rebuild the lodge (it is a dump), put in more night skiing and snowmaking, and get some good energy going. There seems to be a group of people that want to see it gone and converted back to "wilderness." Hate to say it folks, but that area will never be wilderness. There is also a group who want to vandalize/trash the place. Sad.

if they could get water

I wonder where is the water coming from for the snow making they are currently doing. They don't have any pond nor lake nearby (except for little duck pond at Trailside Museum). Do they have well? Are they blowing tap water?

If you think about how much snow they make in comparison to other mountains...it's practically nothing. They make only make it on Big Blue, sometimes that blue one in the middle and the bunny slope. That might add up to half of a standard-length trail in Vermont/NH/Maine. (Not to say that they shouldn't have a pond - they should.)

That seems pretty challenging through. The terrain there is pretty steep all the way to the Washington St so there aren't much of flat land around there suitable for any decent size pond. Only flat land is already taken by the parking lot. Too bad that Houghton's Pond isn't right at the foot of the ski hill.

Blue Hills is home to 20+ high school ski teams in Eastern MA. The course set down Big Blue for week day ski races is 10X more challenging than the weekend venues of Ragged. Campgaw's operation last season was so much better than what had been experienced under the Ragged Mt management (Ragged "ran" Blue Hills for approx 5 or so years) When Ragged went down, the lease at Blue Hills freed up and NJ based Campgaw came in. There is lots of good info on the SJ/Nelsap site about Blue Hills. If you have nothing better to do on a Wed nite, the HS ski racing there is top notch. Of course, if your looking for a peaceful evening of skiing, you should probably avoid the place on Wed eve's.

This is what I had posted in the "season pass roll call thread":

Blue Hills is run by Ski Campgaw Management who has operated Campgaw in NJ for the county of Bergen for years. I used to live near Campgaw so I've been there a bunch of times, for a very small hill the management blows a lot of snow and always has a really good base going and good snow conditions for NJ, so I would expect the same at Blue Hills.

We hiked Blue Hills yesterday to check out the foliage.

We went down Big Blue on the way back and noticed that they were working on the slope laying down new snow making pipes and there seems to be work going on on the beginner slope too.

I checked out their web site and they had some construction pictures and cute "under construction" icons for the trail status.

I also noted the following "Mountain Manager's View" on the pamphlet I picked up which is a good summary of improvements they've been doing on the mountain and what's coming for the new season.

I had a pass there last year, and the new management did a real good job. They were doing mountain improvements throughout the past winter. They have said there will be more done this fall. They made snow on a lot more trails then Big Blue (I would say 75% of them had snow made on them last year). I work in Quincy, and live in Raynham so it was a great place to stop for an hour or two after work. I just kept my stuff in the car, and would throw it on in the parking lot and then head right for the lift. I am buying a pass again there this year (maybe heading there at lunch today to get it before the rates go up).
